Manual Muscle Testing of Hip

The Psoas Major and the Iliacus
Muscles
Testing Position in AG :Testing Position in AG : Short- Short-
sitting, Hands should be holding sitting, Hands should be holding

Resistance:Resistance: Applied to the Applied to the
proximal knee on the anterior proximal knee on the anterior
surface of the thighsurface of the thigh. .
Gravity minimized (GM):Gravity minimized (GM): side- side-
lying position with the lower lying position with the lower
limb supported on a powder limb supported on a powder
board; the hip is in neutral board; the hip is in neutral
rotation, and the knee is flexed rotation, and the knee is flexed
90 degrees90 degrees

The Psoas Major and the Iliacus
Muscles
•Palpation:
•Psoas Major: With the subject seated and bent
forward to relax the abdominal muscles, place
fingers deep into the abdomen below the ribs
and above the iliac crest, gently pushing
toward the posterior abdominal wall
•Iliacus: It is difficult to palpate

The Psoas Major and the Iliacus
Muscles
•Substitution:
•Use of sartorius will result in hip abduction
& ext rotation in addition to flex.
•Use of tensor fascia lata will result in hip
abduction & int rotation in addition to flex.
