Introduction The term community refers to a collection of people who interact with one another and whose common interests or characteristics from the basis for a sense of unity or belonging.

Definition Community Health Community health refers to the health of a defined group of people and the actions and conditions, both private and public(government) ,to promot,to protect and preserve their health. Community Health Nursing It is a synthesis of nursing and public health practice applied to promoting and preserving the health of people.

Brief History O f Community H ealth I n I ndia The history of health in india goes back through the centuries to about 3000 BC. The experience and concern in health development date back to vedic period between 3000 and 1400 BC. The Ayurveda and other system of medicine this time sugget the development of comprehensive concept of health by an ancient sages of india .

History Of Community Health Nursing In I ndia 3000 BC – In the indus valley civilization,one finds evidence of well developed environmental sanitation programs such as underground drains,public baths . 2ooo BC – Rigveda marks the beginning of the indian system of medicine.A science of life and art of living said to be founded by sage ‘ATREYA’. 1000 BC – Atharvaveda mentions the twin aims of medical scienceas health and longevity and curative treatment. 272-236 BC - King Ashoka convert to Buddhism,built number of hospitals.

237-201 BC – King Buddha instituted a state medical system,appointed doctor for every 10 villages on the main roads of India . 200-100BC – Patanjali explored the yoga system of philosophy of mental and physical discipline. 100 BC – Charaka the first Samhita, classical exposition of Indian System of with almost medicine deals all the branches of medicine, anatomy, Pathology, treatment and an extension material for more than 600 drugs.

200-300 AD – Susharuta Samhita appears to have been revised by Nagarjuna , laid main emphsis on Surgery. 500-600 AD – Vagbhata wrote Astanga Hridaya 800-1300 AD – A number of treatises were written in India during this period. Anka Prakasha , Chikitsa sangraha etc . 1600 AD – The rule of british East India the company established in India

Pre I ndependence Period By the middle of the 18th century ,the British established their rule in India , which lasted till 1947 . 1757 – The British had established the Civil and military services . 1825 – The Quarantine Act was Promulgated. 1859 – A Royal Commission was appointed to investigate the Cause of extremely unsatisfactory Condition of British Army Stationed in India. 1864 – Establishment of Sanitany Commissions at Bombay ,Madras and Bengal.

1869 – A Public health and a Commissioner officer appointed by government of India. 1873 – A birth and death registration act was promulgated . 1880 – The vaccination act introduced. 1881 – The Indian factories act was passed.   1885 – The local self government act launched.   1888 – The government of India assigned local bodies responsible for Sanitation

1896 – The plague Commission was appointed. 1897 – The epidemic diseases act was passed. 1904 – The plague commission report Submitted . 1909 – The Central Malaria Bureau founded in Kasauli . 1911 – The Indian research fund association ( Now Indian Council of medical Research - ICMR ) was established for the promotion of Research.

1918 – The Nutrition Research laboratory established at Coonoor in 1918. The institute was shifted to hydrabad in 1959 and renamed National Institute of Nutrition (NIN) in 1978 . 1919 – The Montage- chelmsford Constitutional Reforms initiated took care of public health. 1920-21 – Municipality and local board act passed for further advancement of Public health.

1930 – The All india institute of hygiene and public health, Culcutta was established. The child Marriage restraint act ( sarda act) introduced. Minimum age of Marriage for girls and boys fixed 14 and 18 respectively. 1931 – A Maternity and child welfare bureau was established. This was Set to function Red under the Indian Society . 1935 The Goverment of India Act 1935 revitalized the1919 act: Provinces gained greater autonomy. 1937 – Establishment of the central advisory board for health.

1939 – The Madras public health act was passed ,Tuberculosis association of India was established. 1940 – The Drugs act was Passed.   1943 – The health Survey and Development Committee ( Bhore Committee) appointed . 1946 – Bhore Committee submited it’s report public health Medical research .

Post Independence Period 1947 – Ministries of health were established at the center and States . 1948 – India joined the world health organization аs a member stage.   1949 – An Ordinance passed to start “Indian Nursing Council”. 1950 – The Constitution of India came in to force in 1950 and India became a Republic in the Commonwealth. 1952 – International tutors were appointed in Culcutta to train nurses in general nursing .

1959 – The Murlidhan committee was appointed government of India to survey the progress made field of health. Since Submission of the BHORE Committee report.   1960 – International Seminar on "nursing research“was hosted of by the joint effort INC.   1962 – Sponsored 45 Indian nurses to pursue public health education from USA. 1971 – Trained nurses of india s ponsored Conference at Chandigarh .   1972 – The medical Termination of pregnancy act came force on 1 st April 1972.

1975 – Shrivastav Committee served as a cause for estamblishment of "Rural Health Service ". 1987 – Succession of nursing leaders started " College of Nursing community Health Services" at vellore , Tamilnadu . 1991 – The Baby friendly hospital Initiative was launched by WHO and UNICEF Promote and support breast feeding. 2005 – INC decided to advice on upgrading all nursing School to college. 2008 – The global fund to fight AIDS, T uberculosis and Maleria project was taken up by INC.

2010 – WHO published a frame work for Community health nursing education. 2012 – Directorate general of health services ministry of health and family welfare revised the indian public health Standend ( IPHS ) guidlines for community health, PHCS.   2016 – " INC has drafted Primany health care Practitioners.   since the time of independence the nursing education has grown rapidly with a significant r ise in the infrastructure and Manpower.
