What is Massage? I t is the application of soft-tissue manipulation techniques to the body, generally intended to reduce stress and fatigue while improving circulation. It is a holistic therapy and offers benefits for physical, mental, spirirtual and emotional well-being of the person giving the massage as well as the person receiving it. It works well on young and old, male and female, and can even be applied as self-help therapy. The word “ Massgae ” is most likely to have emerged from the Greek word “ Massein ” , meaning “to knead” or the Arabic word “mash” meaning “to press softly”.

What is Hilot ? Hilot is a traditional healing technique from the Philippines that also includes massage techniques. The massage techniques relax stressed muscles. Hilot also includes Joint manipulations to help relax stressed muscles. Hilot encompasses a wide variety of techniques beyond the treatment of stressed muscles. Hilot is used to reset dislocated and sprained joints, diagnose and treat musculogamontous and musculoskeletal ailments, and even to aid in giving birth and to induce abortion.

The Development of Modern Massage Techniques Modern massage techniques have evolved mainly from a system developed by a Swedish physiologist, Per Henrik Ling ( 1776–1839), known as Swedish Remedial Gymnastics Ling used the terms “effleurage”, “ petrissage ”, “vibration”, “friction”, “rolling” and “slapping”

Twentieth-Century Developments During the First World War the demand for massage to treat the injured grew and many more massage therapists were trained There was rapid growth in electrotherapy and eventually massage ceased to be part of physiotherapy training. It became little used as a therapeutic treatment in hospitals. There was, however, a continuing demand for massage in clinics, health farms, fitness and leisure centers.
