Hebrew Law denied deaf rights. 1000 B.C. Aristotle asserted that, “Deaf people are incapable to reason”. 354 B.C . Socrates mentioned the use of signs by the deaf of Plato’s Cratylus 360 B.C.

Pliny the Elder published his Natural History 77 AD St. Augustine believed that Deaf people can learn and thus are able to receive faith and salvation. 354-430 AD Rudolf Agricola, a Dutch humanist, believed that the Deaf could communicate via writing. 1521

John Bulwer studied gestures and published Philocopus,and Chirologia . 1614-1684 Girolamo Cardano was the first physician to recognize the ability of the Deaf to reason 1501-1576 Alberti , a German physician, published the first book of any kind specifically regarding deafness 1591

The earliest records of Deaf Education are from Spain . 1620 William Holder and John Wallis 1680 Abbe Charles Michel de l'Epee (1712-1789) established the Royal Institution of Deaf and Mutes in Paris. 1760
