HISTORY OF MAYOYAO

Mayoyao is one of the oldest towns of Ifugao that gave birth to the municipality of Potia now Alfonso Lista that was born on May 11, 1955 by virtue of RA 1222 and Aguinaldo that was ratified Dec.6,1980. Mayoyao lies along the eastern mountain ranges bordering the province of Ifugao. It has a total land area of 33,556 hectares and a population of 16,722 (2007) scattered among its twenty seven barangay.

Historical Development Etymology The municipality is presented called “Mayoyao” from the word “yaw-yaw” which connotes “food abundance”. During the earlier days, it was called by the early inhabitants as “henanga” which means “center”. According to John Langbayan( a former Mayor and Board member) in his book history of Mayoyao. The word “ majawjaw ” is rooted from our dialect which has something to do with air. A person who wanted to get some fresh air specially when perspiring wanted to “ monjawjaw ”.

Another version ,the name “majawjaw” was drived from the name of a woman named “May- ao ” who once lived in the area according to tradition or legend. Creation of the Municipality Mayoyao was founded more than 2,000 year ago by game hunters from a southeast place called “Bfagwang” and by pioneer farmers from the west called”Cambulo” with this description of origin. It can be theorized that these early settles came from “Bfagwang”, a certain place along the shiffu (now chico) river w/in the territorial jurisdiction of Paracelis, mountain province.

Mayoyao was first organized as a town administered by a Municipal President, Secretary, Treasurer and four Policemen on January 1,1916. Socio-Economic Before the division of Mayoyao and Aguinaldo, the people of Mayoyao were grouped into four namely: Henanga, Ibah-hel , Icholog , and Ibotayan .

The Ibotayan (now belonging to Aguinaldo) occupied the eastern portion of this place: Ubao Chalog Chalalo Damag Monggayang Jacmal Pangui -id Talite Bunhian

They are composed of Gaddangs and Balangaos . On the later part of 18th century, some Mayoyao moved eastward and drove the Gaddangs and Balangaos out of Bunhian , Jacmal and Damag . The Gaddangs moved back to Bolinaonao , now part of Potia which was created out of Mayoyao as a separate town by virtue of RA 1222 while the Balangaos went to Natonin .
