WHAT IS HISTORY?

Is History just like a CHISMIS?

History is derived from 3 foreign words: Historia (Latin) – which means “inquiry or investigation”. Historie (French) – which means “knowing”. Histor / Istor (Greek) – which means “learned or wise man”.

Requisites for events to be considered historically significant: Events should be based on facts. Events should be past human events. Events should be definite in time and place. Events should be social in nature. Events should be socially significant.

History – is the art and science of investigating and recording past human events that are definite in time and place, social in nature, and socially significant. The word History is referred usually for the accounts of phenomena, especially human affairs in chronological order. There are theories constructed by historians in investigating history: the factual history and the speculative history.

Factual History vs Speculative History Presents readers the plain and basic information What When Who Goes beyond facts because it is concerned about the reasons for which events happened Why How It tries to speculate on the cause and effect of an event (Cantal, Cardinal, Espino & Galindo, 2014).

3 basic sources of History Written records – diaries, newspapers, chronicles, journals, etc. - “no document, no history” Oral traditions – epics, legends, folktales, riddles, myths, etc. Relics – skeletal remains, stone tools, coins, pottery, etc.

Classification of Sources: Primary Sources – sources produced at the same time as the event, period, or subject being studied. archival documents, photographs, memorabilia, drawings, oral history (eyewitness), letters, census, government records, etc. Secondary sources – sources produced by an author who used primary sources to produce the material. books, articles, journals.

The historian should be able to conduct an external and internal criticism of the sources through- External criticism – the practice of verifying the authenticity of evidence by examining its physical characteristics. Internal criticism – the examination of the truthfulness of the evidence.

What are the importance of studying history?

The following among others will answer for us: Rizal : “In order to read the destiny of the people, it is necessary to open the book of its past.” Morga : “It is necessary first to make known to us the past in order that we may be able to judge better the present.” Filipino Saying : “ Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan ay hindi makakarating sa paroroonan .” (Loosely Translated: “One who does not look back to where he came from will never reach his own destination.”)

Agoncillo : “If you are afraid of the truth, don’t go to history." George Santayana : “Those who can not remember the past are condemn to repaeat it.” Lourd de Vera : “ Ang taong walang kasaysayan ay walang saysay .”

The importance of History: Bridging the gap between the past and present. Explaining causes of things and events. Projecting the future. Interpreting conditions of a given space and time. Promoting nationalism and patriotism.
