1] Uplifting lower castes The caste structure according to him was slavery. His book ‘Ghulamgiri’ focused on the Brahmin domination and the poverty and distress the poor people of those times were facing. Mahatma Phule felt that all the problems of the Dalits could be solved if they were given proper education. 2] Gender Justice Men kept their women uneducated so that they would never question their dominance. However, Phule built a number of schools for girls and the lower castes (called mangs and mahars), and he was the one who built the first girls’ school in 1848. He also set up an orphanage in 1854 to provide shelter to the widows and their children. 3] Satya shodhak samaj Phule founded the Satya shodhak samaj (The seekers of the truth) on 24 September 1873. The society aimed to lessen the sufferings of the Dalits and women. His wife Savitribai was the head of the Women’s wing of the Society.
