Homo neanderthalensis

When and where they existed Neanderthals (Homo neanderthalensis) is an extinct species of the Homo genus that inhabited Europe and parts of western Asia from 230,000 years ago until 28,000 years ago.

During their existence, it is believed that they live simultaneously in the same European territories with the Man of Cro-Magnon (the first modern humans in Europe) for 5,000 years. This coexistence has been demonstrated by fossils found in the caves of Châtelperron and the analysis of DNA found in caves of Asturias (El Sidrón).

Social Behavior They lived in organized groups of about thirty members, in caves. They used fire and buried dead.

Characteristics of Homo Neanderthalensis Robust skeleton Wide pelvis Short limbs Barrel chest Beetle-browed Low and sloping forehead Prominent face Chinless jaw Large cranial capacity (1550 cm ³)

Language There is a lot of controversy about how the Neanderthals communicated: Some believe that they had a language similar to ours that included compositional structure and grammatical rules. Others argue that they had a less developed language that was closer to the communication system of Apes. According to the archaeologist Steven Mithen, Neanderthals had a communication system that was called "Hmmmm"

Neanderthals tools Like earlier hominids, Neanderthals made and used tools. However, the tools produced by the Neanderthals were much more advanced than those used by their predecessors.

Neanderthals learned to combine different types of stone into a single tool, and they discovered how to use a wide variety of soft and hard stones for specialized tasks.
