Honesty and Integrity

A presentation about the importance of honesty and integrity in our lives both in the social and professional spheres , simple principles that encourage us to be honest , the drawbacks of dishonesty in the short and long run and a story to substantiate all the above.

2. ‘Honesty is the best policy’, we have heard this a countless number of times, In most cases, honesty is more than just the best policy as it has the power of avoiding much worse consequences. It’s okay to look bad, make mistakes and have a horrible day. Everyone does. But this is only temporary, and should not stop us from committing to ourselves and to others for becoming good citizens. So let us take a deep breath and talk about honesty. ‘The real things haven’t changed. It is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; and to be happy with simple pleasures.’ -Laura Ingalls Wilder, American writer (1867-1957)

3. What is honesty? Honesty is the quality of being truthful to oneself and others. It means not lying, cheating, stealing, or tricking anyone, no matter what situation arises. Honesty attributes to other qualities such as uprightness, fairness, sincerity, frankness, and most importantly, freedom. Being honest implies being completely frank and truthful about your standpoint, and to be free of deceit and untruthfulness, while honouring your standpoint on a topic.

4. Importance of honesty If you think taking a short cut and sacrificing your honesty for a little bit of fun, money, success or pleasure, think again. You are thinking short term, in the long run, violating trust with others or even yourself is a sure and desolate path to failure.

7. A Story on Honesty A milkman became very wealthy through dishonest means. He had to cross a river daily to reach the city where his customers lived. He mixed the water of the river generously with the milk which he sold for good profits. One day he went around collecting the dues in order to celebrate the wedding of his son. With the large amount collected, he purchased plenty of rich clothes and glittering gold ornaments. But while crossing the river, the boat capsized and all his costly purchases were swallowed by the river. The milk vendor was speechless with grief. And at that moment he heard an otherworldly voice that came from the river, “Do not weep! What you have lost is only the illicit gains you earned through cheating your customers ! ”

8. CONCLUSION For all human problems, honesty is the ultimate solution. Greed, corruption, and sin are everywhere in society. In today’s fast-moving and competitive world, we are so engrossed in competition, rather than cooperation, and have forgotten about moral and integral ethics. People should realize the value of honesty in order to regain social and economic balance. It is imperative for us to rethink and remodel our drive to strive, and to bring back honesty in society so that the world becomes more organized, productive, and ultimately, a better place.
