How did the Second World War start?
In 1918, Germany lostWorld War One. Britain, France and America won
World War 1.
Germany had to give up land and was banned from having any army of its
own.
Germany had to pay lots of money to Britain and France for starting the war.
By 1928 Germanyhad almost no money.
There was no work for anyone and many people were starving.

In 1933a man named Adolph Hitlerbecame the leader of
the German government and the leaderof Germany.
He had big plansfor his country and started to build up
Germany’s strength by putting people back to work
building, making and becoming a fit and healthypeople.

He also started to build up a hugearmy–but Germany had been banned from
doing this –it was illegal.
By 1935Germanyhad become one of the strongestand most powerful
countries in the world.
But Hitler believed the German peoplewere the best in the world–he believed
that they were superiorto anyone else.
Hitler wanted Germany to rule the world.

So he ordered his huge army to invade other countries.
In 1939the German armies invaded Poland, Holland, Czechoslovakia,
Norwayand Finlandand took control of their peoples.

Hitlerordered his armies to controland rule the countriesthey had invaded.
Everyone living in those countries had to do exactly what the Germans
wanted.
If they didn’t they were put in prison or even shot dead.
Hitlerdid not like Jewishpeopleat all (those people in all the countries,
including Germany itself, who belonged to the Jewishfaith).
So Hitler had them capturedall together by his soldiers, and they were all put
in special prison camps.

In 1940 Winston Churchill became Prime Ministerof Britain.
