2. Puronics manufactures multi-media water conditioners that soften, filter
and refine your water all in one system. As the water passes through the
system, it goes through several layers of filter media, each with its own
purpose.

3. Three Types of Media
First Layer: SilverShield® HYgene®
oActivated carbon embedded with microscopic particles of silver
¬Reduces chlorine and chloramines
¬Removes unpleasant tastes and odors
¬Inhibits the growth of bacteria within the filter media bed
Second Layer: High-Capacity S-759 Resin
oSoftens water
oReduces iron and turbidity
oResin beads are uniform in size, providing higher flow rates and
maximum efficiency
Third Layer: Silica Gravel
oPolishes water, making it crystal clear

4. Why Use Silver?
Silver is a natural substance that is really good at eliminating bacteria.
oIt has been used for its antimicrobial properties for thousands of
years
oIn the 1970s, NASA harnessed the power of silver to purify water on
the Space Shuttle Orbiters
oWhen we found that bacteria tend to flourish in water softeners,
especially at the top of the filter media bed, we developed
MicroSilver Bacteriostasis™ technology based on NASA’s silver ion
technology
oOur SilverShield® HYgene® filter media uses this technology to
safely inhibit the growth of bacteria within the filter media bed

5. How Does Water Softening Work?
Water softeners make use of a process known as ion exchange. Hard
water contains a significant amount of two minerals, calcium and
magnesium.
oA water softener exchanges the calcium and magnesium ions
present in the water for sodium or potassium ions that are attached
to the resin beads
oWhen the resin beads become saturated with calcium and
magnesium, the system goes through a regeneration cycle
oThe calcium and magnesium ions are flushed down the drain and
replaced with sodium or potassium ions
oThe system is ready to soften again
