ALBENDAZOLE ABHIJITH SP CVAS POOKODE

Introduction Albendazole , also known as  albendazolum,  is a medication used for the treatment of a variety of parasitic worm infestations.  It is useful for giardiasis, trichuriasis, filariasis, neurocysticercosis, hydatid disease, pinworm disease, and ascariasis, among other diseases. Albendazole is a broad-spectrum antihelminthic agent of the benzimidazole type. Albendazole was developed in 1975.  It is on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines. Though albendazole is effective in treating many diseases, it is only FDA-approved for treating hydatid disease caused by dog tapeworm larvae and neurocysticercosis caused by pork tapeworm larvae. 17-09-2020 ABHIJITH SP CVAS POOKODE 2

Class Belongs to the Class: Benzimidazole. Contain Benzene ring and Imidazole Group. Albendazole is mainly used in cattle and sheep, but has found some use in cats and dogs as well; it is also used in ratite birds for flagellate parasites and tapeworms. It is also used off-label to treat endoparasites in goats and pigs. 17-09-2020 ABHIJITH SP CVAS POOKODE 3

MOA Albendazole  is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic. The principal mode of action for  albendazole  is by its inhibitory effect on tubulin polymerization which results in the loss of cytoplasmic microtubules. Actually microtubule is composed of dimers made up by alpha tubulin and beta tubulin. This fusion to form dimer is inhibited by these drugs. So no microtubules are formed. Also it Blocks GLUT-2 Transporter. ATP production is decreased resulting in worm immobilization and death. 17-09-2020 ABHIJITH SP CVAS POOKODE 5

Tips. Thiabendazole has least use due to most toxic among these and have more side effects. Mebendazole is usually well tolerated. Thiabendazole was the first benzimidazole anthelmintic  agent produced. 17-09-2020 ABHIJITH SP CVAS POOKODE 11
