Morning Scenario 01 HOW THE OTHER HALF LIVES 02 Exit slip 03 Agenda

Take 5 minutes to discuss the scenario on the next slide with your pod. Scenario

Scenario You live in a small, run down apartment with your family of 8 in a neighborhood that is overpopulated. Even though, there is barely any running water, the job you and your family work barely allows you to afford the apartment alone. You are unsure if you could continue this way with your family. What do you do?

Annotating “ I consider as lovers of books not those who keep their books hidden in their store-chests and never handle them, but those who, by nightly as well as daily use thumb them, batter them, wear them out, who fill out all the margins with annotations of many kinds, and who prefer the marks of a fault they have erased to a neat copy full of faults.” -Desiderius Erasmus

In 1899, the St. Louis Transit Company employed around 4,000 workers, and 2,100 of them had joined the newly established St. Louis division of the Amalgamated Association of Street Railway Employees of America (AASREA). Not appreciating their employees’ rights as workers, the St. Louis Transit Company fired any employee caught wearing a union button or openly admitting they were a part of the union. On top of this, many employees were working 12-hour workdays for a mere pittance of 12-16 cents per hour. Annotating Example
