2. Long before the gods appeared, there was only the formless confusion of CHAOS . NIGHT was the child of CHAOS , and so was EREBUS , which is the “unfathomable” depth where death dwells. In the whole universe, there was nothing else: black empty silent endless

3. LOVE was born. Order and beauty began to banish blind confusion. LOVE created LIGHT and DAY . The EARTH and HEAVEN also appeared. They were GAEA and URANUS or OURANUS

4. The children of Gaea and Uranus: THE 3 HUNDRED-HANDED MONSTERS Hundred hands and fifty heads THE 3 CYCLOPS (the wheel-eyed) Each had one enormous eye THE TITANS Uranus hated the things with a hundred hands and fifty heads. He imprisoned them in a secret place within the earth. Gaea appealed to her two remaining children to help her.

5. Only one was bold enough, the Titan CRONUS , who wounded his father terribly. From Uranus’ blood sprang the: GIANTS (fourth race of monsters) ERINYES (the FURIES ) “Those who walk in the darkness” Punishers of the sinners

6. Cronus became the lord of the universe, with his sister-queen, RHEA Hestia Demeter Hera Hades Poseidon Zeus

7. When Rhea bore Zeus, she succeeded in having him secretly carried off to Crete. She gave her husband a great stone wrapped in swaddling clothes which he supposed was the baby he was about to swallow.

8. Zeus rebelled against Cronus, for he had a good cause to do so.

9. A terrible war happened. between Cronus, helped by the Titans, against Zeus with his five siblings. The Titans were conquered because Zeus released the hundred-handed monsters

10. Zeus was not completely victorious because of TYPHON . But Zeus had now got the thunder and lightning under his own control.

11. The Giants rebelled to unseat Zeus. By this time, the gods were very strong, and they were helped too by HERCULES The Giants were defeated and hurled down to Tartarus.

12. The world was cleared of monsters, and was ready for mankind
