What is GLOSSOPHOBIA? Glossophobia is the term used for fear of public speaking which is very common phobia that affects 75% of the population. Are you glossophobic? Yor are not alone dear, I will be sharing the list of 5 people, who are considered as the biggest orators of all time, actually suffered from acute glossophobia at one point of time in their life. Read their stories ahead to know how they overcome this challenge.
STORIES DO TEACH A LESSON
1.WARREN BUFFET “ You have to it. And the sooner you do it, the better. It’s so much easier to learn the right habits when you are young. If you have a fear of associating with people, you have to go out there and do it and it’s painful.” ~Warren Buffet
STORY OF WARREN BUFFET Oh yes. Even I was shocked when I read this name. When he was in college, he was petrified of getting up and saying his name in front of the class. After reading this, I said to myself, “ Isn’t he the third richest man on the planet, with a net worth of $65.7 billion.” How did he even manage to earn so much money with a fear like this? Well! The answer is he managed to overcome his fear and it surely did not happen overnight. After avoiding much of the courses that would require him to speak in front of others, he entered the world of stock market aged 21. Immediately, he was left with two choices – either reach his full potential by facing his fear or remain an average stock broker all his life. Well he decided to choose the first one and joined a course on public speaking. The best thing about the class was that he realized he was not alone in this but there were 30 more people. Knowing that he is not alone in this and there is nothing to be ashamed in being Glossophobic, he worked hard to get over it and manage to win many hearts as well as dollars in his life.
2. MARK TWAIN “ There are two kinds of speaker- those that are nervous and those that are liars” ~Mark Twain
STORY OF MARK TWAIN People say that Mark Twain was so well versed with Glossophobia, that he even coined a term “Stage Fright” in The Adventure of Tom Sawyer. He writes, that when Tom was poised to give a student speech, “A ghastly stage-fright seized him, his legs quaked under him and he was like to choke. True, he had the manifest sympathy of the house but he had the house’s silence, too, which was even worse than it’s sympathy. He was once stuck by stage fright before delivering a public speaking session in San Francisco. But no situation is difficult enough to make you run away. So he broke the leg by using a simple yet effective trick. He placed some of his friends in the audience who were instructed to laugh religiously whenever he makes any joke. Now, Mark Twain smartly understood the basic psychology of a human being that is to follow the trend. “ If 10 out of 20 people are laughing, probably I should laugh too.” This helped him gain confidence throughout his performance and he was able to deliver amazing public sessions in the future.
3. WINSTON CHURCHILL “ Of all the talents bestowed upon men, none is so precious as the gift of oratory. He who enjoys it wields a power more durable than that of a great king. He is an independent force in the world.” ~Winston Churchill
STORY OF WINSTON CHURCHILL Ask anybody to list the greatest orator of all time and I can assure you Winston Churchill would come on top of that list. As a young boy, even he suffered from Glossophobia. He used to stutter and stammer. He was shy and had a timid temperament. He entered politics as a young boy. Even though he gained a lot of mixed reviews on his oratory, he continued to learn, practice and sharpen his public speaking skills. But sometimes, all this is not enough. Once, when he was delivering a speech that he had memorized word for word; he forgot his lines. He tried his best to remember what to say but could not utter a single word out of his mouth. That day he realized the grip of Glossophobia paralyzing each and every muscle of his body. But he didn’t give up and devised a strategy. Churchill learnt from his mistakes and started preparing notes word for word. He prepared his notes in an exact manner how he had to say them- where to pause, where to expect an ovation, which letters to emphasize and so on.
4.THOMAS JEFFERSON “ The most valuable of all talents is that of never using two words when one will do,” ~Thomas Jefferson
STORY OF THOMAS JEFFERSON He was the third President of United States of America, the Founding Father of country as well as the author of the Declaration of Independence. So how did he manage to do all this if he was suffering from Glossophobia? Yes, I know you are intrigued and so was I. Thomas Jefferson suffered from such acute levels of Glossophobia, that he was diagnosed with social phobia by the psychiatrists. So how did he manage to be a President for 8 years? In his time span as a President, he delivered only two speeches. So an important lesson here is, it is not always overcoming your fears but learning to achieve anything you want by working your way through your fears. Always identify your fears and then learn to keep them at bay in your public speaking sessions.
5.MAHATMA GANDHI “ Be stubborn because you have considered the maximum number of people who will benefit and wish to serve them by solidly banging the drum that for what you know to be true.” ~Mahatma Gandhi
STORY OF MAHATMA GANDHI A small boy who could not utter two sentences out of his mouth in public led an independence movement and made the whole world believe in him. During student life, he got panic attacks when he was on stage. He was once invited to deliver a speech to a vegetarian community in London. After reading one line, he got so terrified that he literally handed over the speech to a fellow member and asked him to read the rest of it. In his autobiography, he wrote , “My vision became blurred and I trembled, though the whole court was doing likewise.” Some fears are overcome only when you have a motivation that is bigger than yourself. His desire to free India from foreign chains instilled such courage in him that he overcame his fear of public speaking managing to act more with fewer words.
THE SIXTH PERSON IS “ I ” “Communication is the brand that is created through your voice and personality that massively builds success in your personal and professional life” ~ Manabi Maity
STORY OF MANABI MAITY Yes me. Even I have suffered from Glossophobia as a young girl. I used to panic and run away from the stage right at the time of speaking in front of audience. The fear of facing so many people in the audience literally crippled me and I looked for excuses for not going on to the stage. But then I got a Mentor. He never gave up on me. Whenever, I performed poorly on the stage, he motivated me to improve. It took me a lot of time to overcome this fear but it eventually happened and I am glad it did. And I am still a learner, practicing so that one day I can deliver my speech at TEDx and Josh Talk. Public Speaking Skill has transformed my life completely and today it is the most important component of my life. “ You can be the next person on this list”
