LET'S TALK! Unit 1C: Essential Communication Skills How to Start, Keep Going, and End a Conversation

TODAY’S GOALS: BE A GREAT TALKER! 1. Use simple phrases to START a chat. 🚀 2. Use listening skills to KEEP the talk going. 💬 3. End a conversation politely. 👋 4. Use rhythm and stress correctly. 🎶 Why? Talking helps you feel happier and make friends!

PHASE 1: STARTING A CONVERSATION 🚀 Safe Topics: - The Weather - Clothes / Fashion - Food / Eating out - Holidays or travel

Useful Starter Phrases: - 'Lovely day, isn't it?' - 'That's a nice jacket.' - 'Excuse me, is anyone sitting here?' - 'Hi, I'm [Name]. Nice to meet you.'

PHASE 2: KEEPING IT GOING 💬 Rule #1: Be an Active Listener 👂 - Look at the person. - Nod your head. - Say 'Uh-huh', 'Right', 'I see'.

Rule #2: Ask Follow-up Questions ❓ - 'Really?' / 'Did you?' / 'What about you?' - 'That's interesting!'

SOUNDING NATURAL: RHYTHM & RESPONSES 🎶 Common Short Responses: - Not at all. - Go ahead. - Help yourself. - Be my guest. Pronunciation Tip: Put stress on the last word → 'Go aHEAD ', 'Not at ALL'.

PRACTICE: LISTEN & RESPOND! Situation → Best Response: 1. 'Can I charge my phone here?' → Go ahead. 2. 'Can I have some snacks?' → Help yourself. 3. 'I think I will take a seat here.' → Be my guest. 4. 'Thank you for your help.' → Not at all.

PHASE 3: ENDING A CONVERSATION 👋 Step 1 : Signal the End → 'Well,' / 'Anyway,' / 'Oh, look at the time!' Step 2 : Give a Reason → 'I've got to go.' / 'That's my bus.' Step 3 : Say Goodbye → 'Nice talking to you.' / 'See you later!' Tip : Don’t walk away suddenly. Give a reason and a warm goodbye.

3 STEPS TO SUCCESS! START → Use a safe topic or compliment. KEEP GOING → Listen actively and ask 'What about you?'. END → Say 'I've got to go.' and 'Nice talking to you.' Pro Tip : A smile is your best conversation skill!

FINAL CHALLENGE: THE HAPPY BENCH ROLEPLAY! Work in pairs! Situation: You are at a café or park. Student A: Start the conversation. Student B: Respond, keep it going for 1 minute, and end politely. Goal: Use one phrase from each phase (Start, Keep, End).

THANK YOU! YOU’RE READY TO TALK! Good talkers are great listeners. Any questions about polite endings or conversation tips? Remember: Practice makes perfect!
