Common Triggers of Anger

How does the brain work ? The Cerebral Cortex (the outer portion of brain) is the Thinking Centre of the brain. It is a part of the forebrain logical reasoning & judgement.. The Emotional Centre of the Brain is the Limbic system . When an individual experience & express anger , he or she is not using the Cortex (Thinking Section) but primarily functioning from the limbic system. . A small structure called Amygdala , storehouse of emotional memories play an important role in the emotional outbursts. During any triggering event ,the Amygdala goes into action without much regard for the consequences . ie Since this area of the brain is not involving in judging, thinking, or evaluating )

You can anticipate and manage your anger “ when awareness is brought to your emotions, power and direction in brought to our life.” When we are attuned and aware of our triggers , we are better able to predict our own responses and make a choices not to respond in an angry manner. Freud’s Theory of Psychoanalysis ID Ego Superego

Defence Mechanism Defence Mechanisms are the unconscious strategies used to protect the Ego from shattering due to unacceptable & harsh reality. Excessive use of defence Mechanisms leads to a habit of escaping from reality& indulgence in falsehood about one’s own self . . . It should be used Moderately

Some of Defense Mechanisms described by Dr. Sigmund Freud : Repression – Repression is an unconscious mechanism employed by Ego to keep disturbing or threatening thoughts outside our conscious awareness. Thoughts that are often repressed are those that would result in feeling of guilt from the Superego. The person forgets those memories completely & cant retrieve them back. Displacement – In this a person cant retaliate against the actual source of anger, the person redirects his anger on a less threatening object. Eg – the principal gets angry with the teacher ,she may come to class & start scolding students without any strong reason. Projection – This involves individual attributing their own thoughts ,feeling & motive to another person. Eg – Mark could not write his paper well as he had not studied, he will not accept that he is the one responsible for it. He may say that most of questions were out of syllabus. Sublimation – Sublimation is considered to be more adaptive defense mechanism in that it can transform Negative anxiety into a more positive energy. Eg – Rajat diverted his pain & energy towards a constructive & attractive cause. An individual may use sublimation to redirect this motivation into more acceptable ,even more productive endeavors. Freud believed that artists creative energies were often a refocusing on carnal impulses or other anxieties, through sublimation.

Identification – Eg Sravan subconsciously adopts the manners of his father whom he is afraid of. This is called Identification. By adopting other persons mannerism ,repeating phrase & language patterns a person tries to use & mirror his Character traits & starts behaving like another person, trying to control one’s anxiety level. Daydreaming – Eg – Raju resorted to day dreaming in order to escape the reality of poverty . When life appears to be distressing ,people often use fantasy as a way of escaping reality. Rationalization – Eg – Edwin could not fulfil the expectations, he gives false Excuse. This is rationalization. It occurs when a person attempts To explain or create excuses for his failure.by doing so an individual is able to avoid accepting the true cause or reason of his failure. Remember , Excessive use of Defense Mechanisms leads to a habit of escaping from reality. It should be used Moderately
