Coach Carter and his team: analysis of a Transformational-Transactional Leadership Presentation submitted by Debora Danisi Supervisor: Dipl.-Betriebsw. Alfred Lukasczyk

Coach Carter’s Transactional Leadership- characteristics:

Coach Carter’s Transactional Leadership- characteristics:

Coach Carter’s Transformational Leadership- characteristics: Later in the movie Coach Carter turns into a transformational leader for his team, taking step-by-step measures to lead them toward success. Coach Carter’s Transformational Leadership- characteristics: Focus on long-term success : Coach Carter urges his players to believe more in themselves, to have greater aspirations – the short-term goal of winning games seems to take a backseat to the long-term goal of continuing with education, attending the college and as a result building a better future than most young people in Richmond.

Coach Carter’s Transformational Leadership- characteristics: 1:18:30 – After winning the game, the players disobey the coach's rules by going to a party. Later on the bus, the coach scolds them for their behaviour. The scene ends with a question from Mr. Cruz: “ Coach, we won the tournament. We are undefeated. I mean, ain’t that what you wanted? Winners ?” Coach Carter's expression of disappointment indicates that he prioritizes the personal and intellectual growth of his players over winning.

Coach Carter’s Transformational Leadership- characteristics: Ability to grow team-building and to bring about a change: Coach Carter cancels basketball games due to his team's academic failures. 1:21:39 – Coach Carter: “ We have failed. We have failed each other ” In order to help his players grow both on and off the court, he challenges them to improve their academic performance. The success of a team lies in the success of all team members.

Coach Carter’s Transformational Leadership- characteristics: Inspirational motivation and ability to foster higher moral maturity: 1:27:15 - Coach Carter: “ I see a system designed for you to fail” ; “Only 6% of Richmond High students go to college” → high probability for his players to be involved in criminal activities .“ “ I will do everything in my power to get you to college and to a better life ” “ I want you to go home, and look at your lives tonight and ask yourself: Do I want better ?” Epiphanic moment: the team realizes that Coach Carter is acting in their best interests The board votes against the lockout and Coach Carter quits. However, his goal is achieved. In an emotional scene, his players are in the gym learning.

Conclusion A defeat on the field does not mean a defeat in life. Those players in the opening scene who were arguing in the locker room have grown from a human and intellectual point of view. Coach Carter’s leadership style has played a critical role in this growth.
