Huqooq ul Ibad
Introduction

Introduction
Each Muslim has 3 types of duties:
the first called huqooq allah
the duties to God
the second called huqooq un Nafs
the duties to our own selves
the third, huqooq ul ibad
the duty towards family, friends, and people at large

Introduction
Allah will forgive us certain transgressions
example: lapses in routine obligations of prayer, fasting,
charity, etc

Problems will arise from lapses in huqooq ul ibad
It is our belief that :
the individual you have wronged
must forgive you before Allah
forgives that particular transgression !

Quran
surah an Nisa :36

And worship Allah [alone], and do not ascribe partners to Him. And do good
unto your parents and near of kin and unto orphans, and the needy, and the
neighbor from among your own people, and the neighbor who is a stranger,
and the friend by your side, and the wayfarer, and those whom your right
hand possess. Verily, Allah does not love those who are full of self-conceit
and boastful.

Bukhari
Book No.46, Hadith 730
The Holy Prophet, pbuh, said:
“everyone of you is a guardian and is responsible for
his charges. The ruler who has authority over people,
is a guardian and is responsible for them, a man is a
guardian of his family and is responsible for them; a
woman is a guardian of her husband's house and
children and is responsible for them; a slave ('abu) is a
guardian of his master's property and is responsible
for it; so all of you are guardians and are responsible
for your charges."

What is Huqooq ul Ibad ?
Islam has prescribed that
its followers give people their due rights
Specific rights given according to specific roles to :
- parents
- spouses
- children
- neighbors
- other Muslims

What is Huqooq ul Ibad ?

Through this:
mutual bonds set and strengthened
between individuals of a Muslim society
spread of love and unity
prevents society from fragmenting

Huqooq in Islam
Types of
Islamic Obligations

Huqooq in Islam

Huqooq in Islam
Islam is a way of life

It involves :
- Huqooq Allah

- Huqooq un Nafs and

- Huqooq ul Ibad

Islamic Obligations
Categories
Huqooq Allah :

- a person's duty towards Allah

- belief in one God, not associating partners
- doing good in this world
- preparing for the hereafter and
- trying to live a clean and good life

Islamic Obligations
Categories
Huqooq un Nafs :

- not harming others
- helping others improve their quality of life
- helping orphans and poor

(we need to improve ourselves significantly in this area)

Huqooq ul Ibad
Types
Two types of Huqooq ul Ibad :

Firstly, Deeni (religious) obligations :

include rights of the Prophets and angels, sahaba and ahl e Bait
and rights of the Ulema

Secondly, Dunyawi (worldly) obligations :

worldly rights include that of close relatives, neighbours,
colleagues, friends, elders, the young and of all Muslims in
general

Huqooq ul Ibad
Deeni
Rights of Ambiyaa and Malaaikah

We are informed about Allah, His pleasures and displeasures
through the Ambiyaa , and they through wahi conveyed by the
Angels
Their teaching is, for our Deeni and worldly benefit and to
safeguard us from sin
On Allah’s command Angels perform beneficial tasks (eg rain)

Thus, rights due to Ambiyaa and Malaaikah are in part, of the
rights of Allah
Favours of Rasulullah
Saw
upon us are the most,
thus the rights due to him are also the most.

Huqooq ul Ibad
Deeni

The rights due to The Prophet, pbuh, are:
To believe in his Nubuwwat
To follow his every command and sunnat
To honour and love him
To continuously convey Salaat and Salaams (Durood) upon him
The rights of the angels are:
To believe in their existence
To believe them to be free of sin

Huqooq ul Ibad
Deeni
The rights of the angels are:

Not entering Masjid after eating/using things with offensive smell
Saving oneself from all things which displease the angels viz :

Huqooq ul Ibad
Deeni
Rights of Sahaaba and Ahle Bayt
Sahaba
ra
and Ahl-eBayt have Deeni and worldly attachment
directly with The Prophet, pbuh
Fulfilling their rights is part of fulfilling rights due to The Holy
Prophet
saw
The rights due to them are :
To follow and obey them
To have love for them
To believe in their being people worthy of honour and nobility
To have love for their friends and enmity for their enemies

Huqooq ul Ibad

Muhadditheen, Asaatiza (Deeni teachers), Mashaikh (Sheikhs)
and authors of Islamic works
Follow and obey them in deeni matters
Honour them (no enmity)
If possible, assist them financially

Huqooq ul Ibad
Dunyavi
The afore mentioned are means of
our Deeni bounties and favours
their rights were made compulsory on us.
There are others who are
means of worldly (dunyavi) favours and benefit
their rights have also been commanded by Shariat

Huqooq ul Ibad
Rights of Parents

Rights of Grandparents
Their rights according to Shariat are exactly the same as for
parents, (whether they be living or deceased)

fulfill the rights of these close family ties, as that of your
parents, as they are Islamically also Mahram

Some Special Issues

Islamic view on adoption
The custom of 'adopting' children has no basis in
Shariat
The Islamic legal status of adopted children is no more
than that of 'sincere friendship'
Legally speaking, like in inheritance, etc., they do not
receive any share

Law pertaining to disinheritance :
The custom of disinheriting is totally unlawful and null
and void
eg: saying that so and so (of his children or Islamically legal heir)
should not receive inheritance
Inheritance is a command of Shariat and thus
obligatory, and not voluntary

Animal Rights

Animals have rights too !
Islam has made ill-treatment of animal
reason for entering Hellfire
Showing them compassion and treating them well
is a means to attain forgiveness of one's sins

Hadith
Sahih al Bukhari
Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, said :

"Once a man was tending to some business, and
became very thirsty. He came across a well, so he
descended into it and drank from it. [When he came
out], he saw a dog panting and rolling his mouth in dirt
(in search of water) due to thirst. The man said, 'This
dog is as thirsty as I was.' So he descended [once
again] filled his boot with water and gave drink to the
dog. [Due to that] Allah rewarded him by forgiving his
sins." They said, "O Messenger of Allah, will we be
rewarded even due to our well treatment of animals?"
He replied, "Yes indeed. For [the well treatment of]
every fresh liver (living thing) you will receive reward."

Hadith
Sahih al Bukhari
 Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, said :

"A woman was punished due to a cat. She imprisoned
it until it died, so she entered the Hellfire due to it. She
did not feed it nor give it drink when she kept it, nor did
she let it free to eat the insects (and other things) of
the earth."

Rights of Animals

Animals not of direct benefit :

- do not cage them for no reason
- do not take the young away from parents
- do not merely kill them for sport

Rights of Animals
Animals we use for our benefit :

- provide for their food and care
- do not task them beyond their capabilities
- do not beat them over the limit

Animals for slaughter/ harmful one which is to be
killed :
- kill with a sharp instrument, knife, etc.
- do not make it suffer unnecessarily
- do not starve an animal or cause it to die

It’s Significance
Allah will not be merciful to him who is not merciful to men
Allah is always ready to help His worshipper
so long as the worshipper is ready to help his brother

Allah is merciful to those who are merciful.
“Be ye then merciful to those who are in the earth,
so that He who is in the heaven may be merciful to you.”

Huqooq ul Ibad
Ideal life
A selfless life is the ideal life of a Muslim
Asked as to the best part of faith, Prophet Muhammad,
pbuh, said:
“That thou love for the sake of God, and hate for the
sake of God, and that thou love for men what thou
lovest for thyself, and hate for them what thou hates
for thyself.”
“Ye shall not believe unless ye love one another.”

Conclusion
The importance of Huqooq ul Ibad
cannot be over emphasised as this
is among the pre-requisites
for proper Ibaadat
