Today, the dynamics of the workplace have
radically changed: new hybrid solutions that
emerged in response to the difficulties en-
countered during the pandemic are now being
incorporated into everybody’s daily routine.
Overcoming many of our longstanding work
traditions, such as commuting, being full-
time at the office and travelling long dis-
tances for just a single meeting, are defining
new habits that seem to be here to stay.
The so-called “remote revolution” is one of
the most significant changes that has been
quickly adopted by almost every company.
Flexible models allowing employees to work
either from home or from anywhere else are
now being more and more implemented. An-
other example of latest innovations is the
4-day week: a pilot test that has been tried
by hundreds of companies across Northern
Europe bringing highly successful results.
All these revolutionary changes, added to
the unstoppable rise of freelancers, start-
uppers and “digital nomads” is shifting the
expectations of the role and layout of every
office around the world.
In terms of design, workspaces have evolved
throughout history, experimenting with var-
ious configurations ranging from old-fash-
ioned cubicles to contemporary open spac-
es with common recreational areas. In order
to keep up with the current dynamics of re-
mote work, it is clearly time to rethink these
spaces in a more flexible and creative way.

While working from home has proven to be
a convenient solution for those who have
enough space to combine daily life with
professional tasks, for many people - espe-
cially for the younger ones - it has meant a
serious issue. Several domestic spaces with-
out the proper conditions to work efficiently
have turned out to be highly uncomfortable
and sometimes even isolating.
Particularly in big cities, these situations
have influenced the request for flexible
spaces outside home to carry out daily tasks
properly. The demand for suitable spaces
where to be productive and at the same time
have the opportunity to interact with others
has increased considerably.
Therefore, the coworking concept that
seemed a novelty just a decade ago has
turned into the new normal in the current
days. This type of spaces, which can be
compared to a sort of shared office, gener-
ally involve an open environment with com-
mon uses and collective facilities.
This paradigm shift in terms of workspaces
has become an unprecedented challenge for
designers. It will be crucial to find hybrid and
resilient solutions that can cope with the
highly fluctuating dynamics of work: it is
time to think about a new “office” concept!

V
The idea of how a workspace should look like
has significantly changed over the years and
today more than ever the possibilities seem
to be endless.
With almost every company allowing hybrid
or remote work even for office-based posi-
tions, more and more people have now the op-
tion to switch from staying at home to work-
ing in a completely different location. In fact,
many professionals are experimenting with
alternative solutions that allow them to
spend maybe a week or even months abroad,
mixing work and travel.
As these dynamics become more rooted in
everyday life, the famous concept of the
“third space” is turning increasingly popular.
Spending time working away from home in
spaces like restaurants, cafes, hotels, and
even museums has proven to be a perfect
solution for those who got tired of being stuck
in the same place.
Following this trend, thousands of bars and
restaurants that are empty at certain times
of the day could be transformed and adapt-
ed in order to be used by this new genera-
tion of nomad workers who are constantly
on the move. Clearly, design and creativity
will be key factors in rethinking existing spac-
es in such a way that they can function effec-
tively as hybrid coworkings.

VII
The challenge of this competition is to fully
explore the power of interior design and its
potential to transform “static” spaces into
flexible and adaptable ones. The goal is to
think outside the box and to experiment
with new hybrid designs that enable differ-
ent uses during a whole day.
Could you imagine how your favourite bar
could become the place where you go to work
every day? The idea is to redesign existing
cafés and restaurants by transforming their
layouts - fully or partially - into a complete-
ly new concept that allows them to combine
their regular functions with coworking uses.
During lunch and dinner, these places are
normally full and very busy. However, in
certain hours of the day, they tend to get
empty and sometimes they are even closed.
The concept of Hybrid Coworking represents
the perfect opportunity to maximise underused
spaces in order to offer more quality places for
those nomad workers who are constantly look-
ing for cool and innovative locations.
How furniture can contribute to the realisa-
tion of adaptable and multifunctional spac-
es? It is clear that the choice of the type of
tables, chairs, lights and any other design
element will be crucial for the success of the
proposal. Colours and textures will definitely
be important when creating the right atmo-
sphere to be focused during some hours and
to chill out after work!

Each designer will have the chance to
choose its own site. This competition does
not foresee a specific location for the proj-
ect: you can select any existing bar, restau-
rant, pub or café that you prefer and which
you believe could become a new amazing Hy-
brid Coworking!
Make sure that the location you pick is not
already functioning as a coworking and that
it has the potential to incorporate this new
program. It is not highly relevant in which
city or town your project is situated, what
really matters is to select a place that can be
transformed through light and original interi-
or-design interventions able to add new facil-
ities and to create unique working spaces.
Thousands of places today are underutilized
or simply not used as they could be. Take the
chance to imagine how through a smart de-
sign proposal they could become perfect
support spaces for today’s workers!
Think about how the old corner bar where you
regularly take your coffee or the pizzeria near
your house could evolve into a new generation
of coworking without losing its original iden-
tity and function. Be creative and explore
the endless possibilities of interior design!

Resilience is a precious value applicable in
any situation. In the case of interior design,
it is clearly a crucial aspect to facilitate mul-
tiplicity of uses. Hybrid Coworking gives each
participant the chance to experiment with
new ideas to transform existing spaces!
Although the competition program is very
open, designers should take into account
some fundamental aspects when making
project decisions. The first one is furniture:
think about what kind of elements will help
you to mix comfortable spaces to work during
some hours, with the original activities of the
chosen location during other moments.
Pay attention to the selection of armchairs,
shelves, bookcases, benches or any other
piece of furniture that could make spaces
more functional and appealing. Feel free
even to design your own equipment!
Second, be sure to consider both natural
lighting sources for table and seating ar-
rangements, as well as plugs and strategic
artificial lighting points to provide adequate
workspaces all day long. In addition, the use
of colours, textures and materials can help to
define specific areas and to create different
atmospheres depending on the uses that will
be required.
Showing the former layout of your project’s
location will be crucial to understand the
power of your design. Use your imagination
and revolutionise the coworking concept!

chitecture from PoliMi, he took postgradu-
ate courses in Museography, Architecture
and Archaeology and Strategic Planning. He
founded Tuc Studio with Annalisa Trolli, Ar-

combining design and Interior Architecture
within a single concept, linked by the highest
expression of design: desire, feeling not
linked to the most rational part of us. Their
project takes shape through an alchemical
and peremptory language, free from cen-

expressive power. Mainly based in Milan, Tuc
