HYDRO POWER IN INDIA SHUBHAM PARMAR B.A. III (GEOGRAPHY) 317206
INTRODUCTION Hydropower is power derived from the energy of falling or fast-running water , which may be harnessed for useful purposes . Hydropower or hydroelectricity refers to the conversion o f energy from flowing water into electricity . It is considered a renewable energy source because The water cycle is constantly renewed by the sun .
Mechanism of Hydropower
Why should we use it ? Renewable energy source Promote Sustainable development Clean and Safe energy
Hydropower in India
India is 7 th largest producer of hydroelectric power in the world. Comes under the Ministry of Power, Government of India. As on 31 st March, 2019 there were 710 HE generating units installed in 204 Hydro-Electric Station . An aggregate installed capacity of 45399.22 MW in operation . The generation from the hydro electric power stations in the country during 2018-19 was 134893.61 MU (excluding import from Bhutan) .
Development of Hydro-Electric A small Hydro-Electric ( 130KW ) established near Darjeeling in 1 897 ushered the beginning of hydro-electric power development in the country . The hydel installed capacity which was only 508 MW in 1947 with 12 H.E. stations , 51 units and maximum unit size of 22 MW at Bhira H.E. station under Tata , has risen to 45399.22 MW (as on 31.03.2019 ) from H.E. stations above 25 MW capacity . Contribution of electricity generation from Hydro Electric Power Station has risen from 2.2 BU during 1947 to about 134.9 BU in 2018-19 . Ministry of Power , Government of India Formed :- 2 July 1992
