FACTS The identified hydro power potential for the state is 16,475 MW out of the estimated 20,000 MW. The Chenab basin comprises of 11,283 MW, Jhelum basin consists of 3,084 MW, Ravi basin comprises of 500 MW and the Indus basin accounts for 1,608 MW. As of October 2017, J&K had a total installed power generation capacity of 3,297.28 MW, comprising 1,733.43 MW under central utilities, 1,513.03 MW under state utilities and 50.82 MW under private utilities ., consisting of 1211.96 MW in State Sector from 21 power projects, 2009 MW in Central Sector from 7 projects.

Mohra 1905 Mohra Hydro-Electric Power Stations. It was in the year 1907, during the reign of Maharaja Pratap Singh, that the British designed a 4000 Kilowatts at Mohra about 22.5 kms. from Baramulla towards Uri in Kashmir. After some years, machinery costing about 2 crores of rupees was set up to add 600 kilowatts to the existing capacity. Srinagar, Sopore, Baramulla and Gulmarg towns are supplied electric power from this power station. Non fuctional since 1992

Uri 1 Uri power station is run-of-the-river (purely ROR) scheme with an installed capacity of 480 MW (4 X 120MW) to harnesses the Hydropower potential of river Jhelum. It is located in Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir. The project comprises of a 21.5 m high & 95 m long barrage with 4 penstock of 283m length and 5.0 m diameter each. The underground power house with installed capacity of 480MW houses 4 units of 120MW capacity each designed to operate under the net rated head of 222.5m

uri 2 Uri-II power station is run-of-the-river scheme with an installed capacity of 240 MW (4 X 60 MW) to harnesses the Hydropower potential of river Jhelum (a tributary of Indus river). It is located in Uri tehsil of Baramulla district of Jammu & Kashmir. The project comprises of a 52 m high concrete gravity dam with 4 penstock each of 34.50 m length (MIV to PH) and 3.5 m diameter each. The underground power house with installed capacity of 240 MW houses 4 units of 60 MW capacities each designed to operate under the net rated head of 118 m 

D hulhasti Dulhasti power station is run-of-the-river with pondage scheme with an installed capacity of 390 MW (3 X 130MW) to harness the hydropower potential of river Chenab . It is located in Kishtwar district of Jammu & Kashmir. The project comprises of a 65 m high & 186 m long concrete gravity dam with 3 penstocks of 93 m length and 3.65 m diameter each. The underground power house with installed capacity of 390 MW houses 3 units of 130 MW capacity each designed to operate under the net rated head of 207.5 m

Lower jehlum Power project

SALAL Power Plant Salal power station is run-of-the-river (purely ROR) scheme with an installed capacity of 690 MW (Stage-I of 3 x115 MW & Stage-II 3 X115 MW) to harnesses the Hydropower potential of river Chenab . It is located in Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. The project comprises of a 118 M high, 630 M long rockfill dam and 113 M high, 450 M long concrete dam with 6 penstocks of 279m length and 5.23m diameter each. The surface power house with installed capacity of 690MW houses 6 units of 115MW capacity each designed to operate under the net rated head of 94.5 M 

Ratle Hydroelectric Plant The Ratle Hydroelectric Plant is a run-of-the-river hydroelectric power station currently under construction on the Chenab River, downstream of the village of Ratle, near Drabshalla in Kishtwar district of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The project includes a 133 m (436 ft) tall gravity dam and two power stations adjacent to one another. Water from the dam will be diverted through four intake tunnels about 400 m (0.25 mi) southwest to the power stations. The main power station will contain four 205 MW Francis turbines and the auxiliary power station will contain one 30 MW Francis turbine. The installed capacity of both power stations will be 850 MW.

Nimoo Bazgo Hydroelectric Plant the Nimoo Bazgo Power Project is a run-of-the-river power project on the Indus River situated at Alchi village, 75 kilometres (47 mi) from Leh in the state of Jammu and Kashmir The Nimoo Bazgo power project envisages utilizing a rated net head of 34 m (112 ft) to generate 45 MW

POWER PROJECTS IN DIFFRENT RIVER BASINS

FUTURE Due to its location in the Himalayan region, J&K has significant hydropower potential for development “ Presently, Jammu and Kashmir is the only state where development of hydropower is a priority. Elsewhere in India, the focus is on solar power,” At a time when hydropower dams are running to challenges  across South Asia, and being dismantled in the US and Europe, the government of India is planning speedy construction of eight hydroelectricity projects in the Himalayan state of Jammu and Kashmir. They will have a total installed capacity of 6,352 MW at a projected cost of INR 567 billion (USD 9 billion ).

New projects These projects are Sawalkote (1,856 MW), Kirthai I (390 MW), Kirthai II (930 MW), Pakal Dul (1,000 MW), Kwar (540 MW), Kiru (624 MW), Bursar (800 MW) in the Chenab basin and the multi-purpose Ujh project (212 MW) in the Ravi basin. Their combined installed capacity is projected to be around double the current installed hydropower generation capacity (3,220 MW) in the state, from projects built over several decades.

Key Findings “The EAC members felt that the proposed location is located in a rich biodiversity area, Kishtwar High Altitude National Park is located within 10 km radius of the project site, addressing of deep pools and their season migratory path in between dam to power house for fish spawning, etc. Environmental concerns ignored Cascading projects on the Chenab earthquake prone area water quality effected
