HYPERREALITY TOM TULL

WHAT IS IT? It is the theory that people can confuse the digital world for the real world, they perception gets changed as to where one ends and the other begins.

JEAN BAUDRILLARD Baudrillard was a French sociologist and cultural theorist, who was most known for his work in post modernism. He created the theory, that there can be a new social reality, and called it hyper reality, he was the person that coined the theory.

HOW DOES IT APPLY IN THE REAL WORLD? Children grow up watching Disney film’s, particularly girls, this then distorts them into thinking that the Princesses that they see are actually real, so if these children go to Disney Land, they get caught in a reality that is not real, but real to them.

EXAMPLES IN THE MEDIA: BROADCAST Hyper reality exists in films and Television, common examples are: The Matrix Inception Derren Brown: The Apocalypse The Only Way Is Essex

THE MATRIX The characters in this film have a danger of being exposed to the idea of hyper reality. The fact that one person can switch between two worlds is a good example that someone could get confused as to what reality they are actually living in.

INCEPTION This is another good example because when people go into this dream state, how do they really know if they are dreaming or if they are actually living? One moment in the film, someone says that the people dreaming believe that, that is the reality, and that when they wake up, that is the dream..

DERREN BROWN: APOCALYPSE This television program shows perfectly how the media and technology can distort our perception into thinking something insane, like a zombie apocalypse, is actually happening, the person involved in the program was tricked into thinking another reality was happening, because of media encouragement.

THE ONLY WAY IS ESSEX People watching this program are tricked into thinking that these people are ‘real’, it is augmented reality. People watch the program and believe that everything is happening as it happens, but these are budding actors that are being scripted, so this is an example of how far people can be pulled into hyper reality.
