HYPERTENSION

INTRODUCTION An estimate of 9.4 million deaths and 162 million years of life lost in 2010 due to hypertension.Hypertension is a foremost risk for fetal and maternal deaths that occur in pregnancy.Globally nearly one billion people suffer with hypertension and

two thirds of them live in developing countries.By the year 2025 an estimate of 1.56 billion adults will be with hypertension.Hypertension was recognised as the cause of 50% of heart disease and 40% of deaths in people with diabetes (2010).

DEFINITION Hypertension is defined as a persistent systolic blood pressure (SBP) of 140 mmHg or more, diastolic blood pressure(DBP) of 90 mmHg or more. * Prehypertension: Systolic pressure :120-139 mmHg.

Diastolic pressure :80 - 89 mmHg STAGES OF HYPERTENSION *Stage 1: Systolic pressure:140-159 mmHg Diastolic pressure:90-99 mmHg *Stage 2: Systolic pressure greater than 160mmHg.
