In this modern age, technology has become part of the daily living activities of people across ages, genders, occupations, lifestyles and culture. With the use of the internet, the world has become smaller because people all over the world can communicate anytime of the day through the internet within a matter of minutes. They can see and talk to one another using different websites in the internet.

WHAT IS A WIKI? This is a website that is collaborative in nature. It means that a user or anyone using this website can participate or work jointly with a creator or author of a written work in a wiki. To work jointly means one can add, modify, edit, delete, revise or updates some of the content of the work of the creator or author of that work. A
A wiki uses software in the name of wiki engine or wiki application. A wiki allows a user to use web browser to revise or update part of the content of the work of an author or writer without any restrictions. However, as a responsible user, you should cite your reliable source from which the information you have added in the websites can be located.
The term wiki was originally named Wiki wiki web. This was introduces by Ward Cunningham in 1995. This ward came from Hawaiian “ Wikiwiki ” which means fast or swift.
EXAMPLES OF WIKIS There are available wikis that you can use in the web. Some of these are the following: 1. Wikipedia - this wiki is the most popular and most used website. It contains information of practically all kinds of topics or subjects from arts to sciences; from reality to fiction; from history to literature to production and manufacturing and anything under the sun. the Wikipedia can serve as an online version of an encyclopedia.
2. Library Blog Wiki - this wiki deals with the way blogs and wikis are used. These are used in Australian libraries. 3. Charles Sturt Library Wiki - this wiki is used by students and staff of Charles Sturt Library. 4. Tolkien Wiki - this wiki is exclusive for the readers of the novels of JRR Tolkien. This website can be accessed at http:www.thetolkienwiki.org/wiki.cgi.
STEPS IN USING WIKI: Open your browser. Some examples are Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox; 2. Type in the content that you want to look for in wiki in the search bar. Example: historic events like World War II; 3. Select the Wiki page from the results or findings from your previous search;
4. You will be directed to the website; 5. From there, you will find information about the topic you are searching for; 6. If the website does not contain the information you need, click the back button and select another search result.
Different Wiki Sites Wikipedia - this is free, open and multilingual online encyclopedia where any user can collaborate, contribute and edit the article. 2. Wikiwikiweb - this is the oldest, open, easiest and fastest web-based collaborative tool in the world.
3. Wiktionary - this is an online multilingual dictionary that contains meaning, origin, and pronunciations of words. 4. Wikiquote - this is a collections from well-known people, books, movies, etc.
5. Wikiversity - this site supports free learning communication, projects, materials and other learning resources that may be used in all levels, types and styles of education. 6. Wikitravel - this is a travel guide that uses a Wikimedia’s software. It provides information about the history, people, culture, and background of different countries.
7. Wikispecies - this is a directory of species of all forms of life ranging from animalia, plantae, fungi, bacteria, etc. 8. Wikinews - this is a compilation of news story made possible through collaborative journalism. 9. Wikibooks - this is a free library of educational books and manuals that maybe edited, changed and improved by anyone.
WHAT IS A SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE MANNER IN USING THE WIKI? Wiki websites that are read all over the world by people from different cultures, socio-economic backgrounds, professions, and hobbies. It is important that one who posts a wiki should observe good manners and right conduct in his/her writings.
Specifically, he/she should remember the following: 1. Be truthful in your content. Write only what is based on facts and real-life experience and not on fiction. 2. Avoid using words that are offensive to people in general. 3. Do not attack personalities. Give respect to people no matter what they do or say,
4. Plan the content of your Wiki carefully. Cite reliable and recognized sources if you are to edit some parts of the content of another writer or author. 5. Give credit where credit is due. Cite those who acted as resource to your wiki content.

SUMMARY A wiki is a website that provides information about any type of subject. It is collaborative in nature because a user can edit, revise, add, or delete some of the information, he/she has gathered from the wiki. Examples of wiki are Wiki Blog, Library Blog Wiki, Charles Sturt Library Wiki, and others. There are simple steps in using a wiki. Post and share materials in a wiki in a safe and responsible manner.
Go and search for Wikipedia.com. examine this website and identify the parts of the Wikipedia you have chosen. Write down the information you have gathered in your notebook.
