A Figure of Speech is a word or
phrase used to express a
meaning other than the literal
meaning.

Simile
Metaphor
Personification

Identifying Figures of Speech
Simile - uses the words like or as
to compare two unlike things
Example: Lumnay danced like a
bird, graceful and light as in flight.

Identifying Figures of Speech
Metaphor- compares two unlike
things by saying that one thing is the
other thing. It does not use like or as.
Example: The Philippine is the Pearl of
the Orient Seas.

Identifying Figures of Speech
Personification- is giving human attributes to
objects that are not human.
Examples:
Flowers on the mountainside danced as Aliguyon
and Bugan passed by.
Now and then, lightning swalloed the darkness in
the stormy night.

She moved as gracefully as a
prima ballerina.

His alarm yelled on him.

She's going through a
rollercoaster of emotions.

His mind is like an encyclopedia.
