IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN The term ideology is a complex phenomena in the study of social sciences on which a great deal of controversy exists among scholars on its meaning and definition. Ideology is basically English version of French word, Ideology, during the French revolution which actually means study of Political ideas.

Ideology of Pakistan: Different Political thinkers and social scientists have defined the term Ideology differentially. According to some scholars ideology is a social process rather than an abstract set of values. While some others consider it as body of ideas. A political ideology is a system of beliefs that explain and justify a preferred political order either existing or proposed an offer of strategy for its attainment.

What is Ideology According to Marxists, it is an instrument of social reproduction. Generally it is used to refer a set of beliefs or socio politico economic dynamics or stimuli which could bring about a great change or revolution. For instance capitalism, communism, socialism and Nazism are referred to as applied ideologies of modern time.

TWO NATION CONCEPTS Pakistan Ideology means that Pakistan should be a State where the Muslims should have an opportunity to live according to their faith and creed based on the Islamic principles. 15

Importance of an Ideology Ideology is a motivating force for a nation which is striving hard to bring stability and homogeneity to its nationhood. It provides the cement binding base to the scattered groups in a society and bring them closer to a common platform. Ideologies impel their adherent to follow a joint line of action for the accomplishment of their goal.

The ideology of Pakistan: Pakistan is a Muslim ideological and developing nuclear state. After the second world war Pakistan came into being on the basis of Muslim ideology. Majority of Muslim writers claim that there is no difference between the ideology of Pakistan and ideology of Islam. They argue PAKISTAN KA MATLAB KIA “LA ILAHA ILLALLAH ”.

The ideology of Pakistan: We could define Ideology of Pakistan as under: ‘‘As per the teaching of Aligarh School of thought, negation of the Indian nationalism on the basis of two nation theory and declaring the Indian Muslim a separate nation, entitled to the right of self determination is called the ideology of Pakistan’’.

The ideology of Pakistan: Basis of Pakistan Ideology: Pakistan ideology is based on the idea of Islamic system. It was a reaction to the Hindu and British exploitation of the Muslims of the sub-continent. It was a revolt against the prevailing system of India where the Hindu nationalism was being imposed on the Muslims and their culture. It contains a strategy to save the Muslim culture from total elimination.

The ideology of Pakistan : Two nation concept: Pakistan ideology was based on the fact that the Muslims were a separate nation having their own culture, civilization, customs, literature, religion and way of life. They can not be merged in any other nation because their philosophy of life is based on the principles of Islam. They were forced to demand a separate homeland to safeguard their religious and national identity.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Ideology of Pakistan Sir Syed Ahmad Khan is the pioneer of the two nation theory. Used the word two nation for the Hindus and Muslims. After being convinced of the Hindu and congress hatred and prejudice for the Muslims. The Muslims were a separate nation who always adhered to their religious identity.

Sir Syed Ahmad Khan and Ideology of Pakistan: The ideology of Pakistan took shape through an evolutionary process. Historical experience provided the base; with Sir Syed Ahmad Khan began the period of Muslim self-awakening;

Quaid-e- Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah was one of the leading Practitioner of India. To name those political leaders who attracted young Jinnah to Politics were Dada Bhai, Gopal Krishna, Mr. John Bride and Mustafa Kamal Atta Turk.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: The 42 years political profile of Mohammad Ali Jinnah confirm that from 1908 to 1927 he was a great ambassador of the Hindu-Muslim unity during his 1 st phase. From 1928 to 1937, he proved himself as a committed advocate of the Muslim rights during his 2 nd phase. From 1938 to 1947 Quaid-e-Azam proved himself as an uncompromising ideologue of Pakistan.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: On different occasions has explained the ideology of Pakistan. Presiding over the 27 th annual session of All-India Muslim League in March 1940 at Minto Park. In his presidential he said, ‘ ‘The Hindu and Muslims belong to two different philosophies, social custom and literatures. They neither inter marry nor interdine together and indeed they belong to two different civilizations which were based mainly on conflicting ideas and conceptions’’.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: Very often the hero of one is the foe of the other and like wise their victories and defeats overlap. MUSALMAN are a nation according to any definition of nation and they must have their own homeland and their territory of their state.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: During the critical phase of Pakistan movement, Quaid-e-Azam explained the meaning of Pakistan as under: Pakistan means not only freedom and independence, but the Muslim ideology which is to be preserved. Presiding the Indian National Congress, Jawahir Lal Nehru abruptly asked Quaid-e-Azam, Mr. Jinnah what is Pakistan? Quai-e-Azam while responding in a tit for Tate manner said, Pandath Nehru! You know Pakistan and its ideology, that’s why you are opposing us.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: In meeting of All-India Muslim League council, held on Nov 09, 1942 at Delhi, Quaid-e-Azam explained the history of India as under: India was never one, never was a nation, never was a country, governed by one single power even with the sword. It is a sub-continent of different nationalities and people. It was never governed in history by one single power.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: In the speech to the students of Muslim university Aligarh in 1942, Quaid-e-Azam, while explaining the right of self determination of the Indian Muslims said, nowhere in the world hundred million people are regarded as a minority. This is not a question of concession or compromise, protection or safeguard. It is the question of the inherent birth right of Muslmans to self determination of the national group inhibiting their sub-continent to establish their own state in these zones where they are in majority.

Quaid-e-Azam and the ideology of Pakistan: During the course of his interview, the representative of the Quaid-e- Azam press of America, Nov 08, 1945, Quaid-e- Azam declared, ‘Pakistan Politically would be a democracy, the component states are provinces would have autonomy.

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN Allama Iqbal the poet, philosopher and a great thinker with the help of his poetry tried to awaken the Muslims of the sub-continent. He believed the separate identity of Muslims as a nation.

IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN & ALLAMA IQBAL Allama Iqbal considered Islam as a complete code of life. He said Muslims of India will ultimately have to establish a separate homeland as they cannot live with Hindus in the United India. 33

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN The political ideology of Pakistan, as elaborated by Iqbal, is deeply rooted in the Islamic values contained in the Quranic teachings, and the traditions (Sunnah) of the Prophet, the founder of the world community of Islam. A close study of Iqbal's works shows that, for Iqbal, the political ideology of Pakistan would primarily be composed of two basic elements, namely, the Quranic concept of the universal Millah (community) and his concept of the Self ( khudi ).

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN It was, in fact, within such an ideological framework that Iqbal was confronted with the problem of redefining the political status of the Indian Muslims in accordance with the contemporary political terminology. In order to achieve this objective, Iqbal had expounded the Two-Nation Theory as the basis for claiming the right of self-determination of the Indian Muslims for carving out a separate Muslim State.

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN Dr.Allama Iqbal-The Dreamer of Pakistan In 1930 All India Muslim league held its 21st annual session at Allahabad. In his thought- provoking presidential address, Dr. Allama Iqbal touched new political horizons of India. The text of the Allahabad address, no doubt, bears testimony to the fact that Allama was the great political philosopher of his time. It was in this address, he besides other things, also desired: “I would like to see the province of Punjab,Sindh , N.W.F.P(now called Khyber pakhtoon khwa ) and Baluchistan amalgamated into a single state. The formation of a consolidated North-Western Indian Muslim State appears to me be the final destiny of the Muslims, at least of the North-West of India”.

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN He also said: “India is a continent of human beings belonging to different races, speaking different languages and professing different religions, I, therefore demand the formation of a consolidated Muslim state in the best interest of India and Islam.”

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN Dr.Allama Iqbal and the Round Table Conference Dr.Allama Iqbal participated in the Second Round Table conference, which was held in London from September 7, to December 1, 1931. During debates, he pleaded for the formation of a Federal Constitution of India with special provisions for the rights of minorities. It was on the eve of this conference, he had lengthy meetings and meanings and meaningful regarding the future of India and the political destiny of the Indian Muslims.

ALLAMA IQBAL AND IDEOLOGY OF PAKISTAN In short, the personality of Allama Iqbal has left indelible marks in history. He tried to awaken the Muslims of India through his philosophy, poetry and politics. He gave the idea of independence to the Muslims of India.

TWO NATION CONCEPTS Pakistan ideology was based on the fact that the Muslims were a separate nation having their own culture, civilization, customs, literature, religion and way of life. Pakistan Ideology was established on the Two-Nation Theory which meant that Hindus and Muslims were two separate nations. 45

TWO NATION CONCEPTS Sir Syed Ahmed Khan used the word Two-Nation for Hindus and Muslims after being convinced of the Hindu and Congress hatred for the Muslims. Muslims were a separate nation who always adhered to their religious identity. 46

IDEOLOGY OF PAK & ALLAMA IQBAL Allama Iqbal openly negated the concept of one-Nation of India. He considered the establishment of Pakistan very essential and vital for the restoration of national and religious identity of the Muslims. He said that Islam guides the mankind in every aspect of life. 47

IDEOLOGY OF PAK & ALLAMA IQBAL He based the foundation of homeland on the religion which later on became the ideology and basis of Pakistan. Allama Iqbal expressed the Muslims sentiments and ideas in true spirit by defining them as separate nation with their distinct national image. 48

IDEOLOGY OF PAK & ALLAMA IQBAL Allama Iqbal infused a spirit of nationalism amongst Muslims with his stirring and thought provoking poetry. He preached an idea of Muslim nationalism based on Islamic unity and brotherhood. Allam Iqbal’s writings, poetry and sayings kindled a new light, aroused a sense of respect, self realization and determination in the Muslim masses. 49
