When was the last time someone criticized
you? Who criticized you —a friend, a
family member, a coworker, or someone
else? Was their criticism helpful or not?
Responding to criticism
GET STARTED
About a month ago, my neighbor criticized me
for blocking his driveway. I didn’t even realize
my friend’s car was blocking it! It was helpful
because now I remind my friends to park on
the other side of the street. That keeps my
neighbor and me happy!

Read the statements. Do you agree or disagree? Why?
Assessing ideas
PREPARE
I don’t think it’s destructivewhen people disagree with
each other. It’s good to have different opinions.
1.It is destructivewhen people disagree with each other.
2.People’s strengthsusually come naturally to them.
3.It is unreasonableto assume that all criticism is bad. Some
criticism can be constructive and should be pointed out.
4.When you think through something carefully and analyze its
different aspects, you get better results.
5.You should weigh the pros and cons of a major decision by
yourself. Asking for others’ input will only have negative
consequences.
6.Everyone working on a team has a validopinion.
7.You shouldn’t draw attention to other people’s weaknesses.
8.It’s difficult to assess whether someone is telling the truth or not.
USEFUL LANGUAGE
Reflexive pronouns: myself –
yourself –himself –herself -itself
ourselves –yourselves-themselves
Pronounswith other/another

Work in groups. Talk about a big decision you’ve made
in your life. Use the questions below to help you
describe the situation.
1.How did you weigh the pros and cons of your decision?
2.Did you receive any constructive criticism from your family or
friends about your decision? Was their criticism helpful?
3.Did your decision have any negative consequences?
Studying abroad in London
Big decisions
SPEAKING
My big decision was studying abroad in London. When I
weighed the pros and cons, I knew living by myself in a
foreign country would be difficult, but my family pointed
out it would also be good for me because . . .
