There are four sections to the Reading paper; each section has 13 questions. Answer: False, 3 sections. Sections 1 and 2 have 13 questions and section 3 has 14 questions.

1. Skim vs. Scan

Skimming is reading FAST in order to get a general IDEA. Scanning is reading rapidly in order to find specific FACTS.

Skimming Secrets The first sentence in every paragraph is usually important and gives the main idea of the paragraph. You need to ignore words you don’t know when skimming .

Scan the text and answer the questions What happened? Where did it happen? Where exactly? How many people died?

2. Identify key words A key word will help you identify the concept associated with the text. Identify key words and underline or highlight them .

Tip 4: NOT GIVEN means the whole meaning of the statement is not in the text. Some key words might be found but not the WHOLE meaning of the statement.

4 TIPS Analyze statement. Match MEANING not key words. False statements contradict the passage. NOT GIVEN means the statement is not in the text.
