If conditionals
Zero conditional We use the zero conditional to talk about facts and general truths, also for laws and rules. if + present simple , present simple Exp : If you don’t eat, you get hungry. If she drinks too much coffee, she can't sleep at night. If you drive too fast, the police arrest you. Ice melts, if you heat it.
first conditional The first conditional is a step up from the zero conditional. It’s used to talk about real and possible situations in the future . if + present simple , will + infinitive Exp : If don’t have work at night, I will go shopping. He will call Ana, if you give him her number. If they don’t come early today, I will start the session. If he wants me to come, he will invite me. if you don’t stop talking, I won't continue telling the story.
second conditional The second conditional is a bit different. It’s used to talk about unreal or improbable ( Imaginary )situations in the present or future . if + past simple , would + infinitive Exp : If I won a lot of money, I'd buy a big house in the country. If she were you, she wouldn’t do that. we wouldn’t fight with him, if he wasn’t rude. If he called me, I wouldn’t go with out him.
third conditional The third conditional is a bit more complex. It’s used to talk about unreal (Imaginary) situations in the past. if + past perfect , would have + past participle Exp : If I hadn’t sold my phone, I would have given it to you. Emma wouldn’t have taken the money, if she had been rich. if john had seen you, he would have said hello. they wouldn’t have been there, If you hadn’t invited them.
mixed conditional 1 To talk about an imaginary past situation and its imaginary result in the present . if + past perfect , would + infinitive Exp : If I hadn’t told her about the party, she wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t visit Dina, if you hadn’t told me that she was sick. If you hadn’t had that job, you would be broke. He wouldn’t be angry, if his team hadn’t lost the match.
mixed conditional 2 To talk about an imaginary present situation and its imaginary result in the past. In this conditional we are describing how things could have been different in the past based on a general truth or fact . if + past simple , would have + past participle. Exp : If he wasn’t smart, he wouldn’t have been in Cambridge. Menna would have won the Competition, If she wasn’t so arrogant. If they allowed student to get in the museum, we would have gone there. If she wasn’t on a diet, she would have eaten a lot of sweats.
