SYLLABUS Social and health education : Food in relation to nutrition and of the health, Balanced diet Nutritional deficiency, Vitamin deficiency, Malnutrition and it’s prevention.

SOCIAL EDUCATION Social education plays a very important role in society. Educational institutions, universities, collages take part in society in different aspects; that is in the people's intellectual development , politics, economics and several other fields.

HEALTH EDUCATION Health Education forms an important part of the health promotion activities . These activities occur in schools, work places, clinics and communities. Individuaľs behavior play an important role in the development of many health problems and influences the development of nation. Health education is a professional and scientitic field.

HEALTH EDUCATION Health education is the process of imparting information about health in such a way that the recipient is motivated to use that information for the protection of his own, or his community's health. Health education is an active learning process , which aims at favorably changing attitudes. Health education is a learning process to learn or promote healthy eating physical activity , tobacco use prevention, mental health, HIV/AIDS prevention and safety

A person is physically healthy when- * All the body parts are there * All of them are in their natural place and position * All of them are doing their physiological functions properly * None of them has any pathology

Health, whereas environmental protection is concerned with protecting the natural environment for the benefit of human health and the ecosystem

IMPORTANCE OF HEALTH EDUCATION 1. Health is the combination of physical, emotional and social well-being 2. It increases the quality of life for all people 3. It decreases the premature deaths 4. Knowledge is must to fulfill needs of student 5. Physical development is essential for mental development 6. It reduces morbidity and mortality rate 7. It brings positive attitude/ behaviour among people towards health 8. It guides the people regarding proper use of health services 9. Health education helps people to take rational decision to solve their own problem 10. Participation in health development programmes

FOOD IN RELATION TO NUTRITION AND HEALTH Nutrition is the branch of science that deals with nutrients and nutrition or all food necessary for growth, development, regulation and repair of the body. Nutrition may be defined as the process by which an animal or plant takes in and utilizes food substances. Essential nutrients include protein, carbohydrate, fats, vitamins, minerals and electrolytes. Nutrition - the study of food Food - substance which contains nutrients Nutrients - substance which can be digested and used by the body.

FOOD IN RELATION TO NUTRITION AND HEALTH Healthy Diet and Nutrition Healthy Diet and Mental Health Healthy Diet and cancer Healthy Diet and chronic disease Healthy Diet and Dental diseases.

1) HEALTHY DIET AND NUTRITION: Eating healthy is very important, otherwise people would not be able to talk, move or breath Having the correct amount of food groups is safe and do not eat too much sugar and fat because it can cause health problems. A balanced dietary promotes nutritional health A better diet, more exercise and reduced stress Healthy diet can help to strengthen your resistance to many diseases Eat fruits and vegetables Don't skip breakfast Drink more water

2) HEALTHY DIET AND MENTAL HEALTH: Mental health problem may also be associated with poorer diet Absence of mental illnesss Adaptation to stress with cuturally age appropriate throughout feelings and behaviours . PROTECT MENTAL HEALTH BY FOLLOWING WAYS: * Take time for yourself *Sleep freely *Care for your health daily *Manage stress diligently *Eat healthy *Exercise adequately *Make plans *Share concerns and worries with friends and family *Think positive *Try new things

3) HEALTHY DIET AND CANCER: *Colon cancer and prostate cancer related to diet rich in saturated fats *Breast cancer and rectum cancer are also related to high fat intake *All types of cancer are related to dietary component PROTECT CANCER BY FOLLOWING WAYS : Regular intake of fruits high in fiber content, vegetables , low saturated fat that are rich in several antioxidants and vitamins that is carotene , vitamin C, vitamin E, retinol which are Potential anti carcinogenic agents, prevent Cancer .

4) HEALTHY DIET AND SKELETAL DISEASE: Intake of diet poor in calcium may cause osteoporosis Intake of excess amount of Alcohol and Smoking habits causes osteoporosis Osteoporosis symptoms are generally shown in aged people PROTECT SKELETAL DISEASE BY FOLLOWING WAYS:

5) HEALTHY DIET AND CHRONIC DISEASES: Chronic diseases are diseases of long duration and generally of slow progression Chronic diseases have appeared in developed countries of the world Chronic diseases occurs with intake of affluent diet Chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes Out of 36 million people died from chronic disease in 2008.

5) HEALTHY DIET AND CHRONIC DISEASES: Protect chronic diseases by following ways: A healthy diet is one that helps to maintain or improve health A healthy diet involves consuming aPpropriate amounts of all nutrients and an adequate amount of water Healthy diet prevents many chronic diseases like diabetes, cancer, hypertension , etc. Eat nutrient-rich foods Maintain a healthy weight Eat regular meals Eat fruits, vegetables Balance your food choices over time Avoid junk food

6) HEALTHY DIET AND DENTAL DISEASES: Intake of sugar rich diet Sugar has causal association with dental caries; the association is particularly strong during Childhood with sugars that are consumed in between meals rather than with meals Intake of excess amount of sugar diet may cause dental problems One of dental disease is gum disease. Gum disease is an infection in the gums surrounding the teeth. Gum disease One of the top causes of tooth loss among adults . A lack of brushing and flossing can lead to gum disease.

6) HEALTHY DIET AND DENTAL DISEASES: Protect dental diseases by following ways: To protect dental diseases and gums, intake super healthy vegetables and fruits which are rich in calcium, folic acid, vitamins and minerals. Daily brushing & daily flossing can avoid gum diseases and dental diseases

BALANCED DIET Balanced diet may be defined as the diet which contains sufficient quantity of all the nutrients that require by a body in a day. Balanced diet includes some important nutrients, vitamins, carbohydrates, fibres , fats, Proteins and minerals. The requirements or need of the nutrients depend on the gender, age and health of the individually.

IMPORTANCE OF A BALANCED DIET 1) Balanced diet enhances the ability to work. 2) Balanced diet helps in the growth of the body. 3) Balanced diet enhances the immune system of the body and it increases the ability to fight against diseases. 4) Balanced diet leads to good mental health and physical health. 5) Excessive intake of carbohydrate and refined should be avoided, which affect the physical health

COMPONENTS OF A BALANCED DIET Vitamins and Minerals Proteins Fats Carbohydrates

1) VITAMINS AND MINERALS SOURCES OF VITAMINS AND MINERALS: Vitamins and minerals are obtained mainly from green vegetables and fruits They increase the immune system of the body against diseases be caused by less intake of minerals Deficiency diseases like Anemia, Goiter etc.can be caused by less intake of minerals in the day

2.PROTIEN Sources : Eggs, Lean meat, Yogurt, Soy products, Seeds & Nuts etc. Proteins are obtained from dairy products like eggs, milk, chicken, meat etc Intake of protein is necessary for growth purposes Proteins also useful in building muscles Deficiency : The most common protein deficiency disease is Kwashiorkor.

3) CARBOHYDRATES: Sources : Soft drinks, Potatoes, Milk, Popcorm , Cookies, Corn etc. Carbohydrates are also obtained from bread, chapati , rice, wheat etc. Carbohydrates are the main source of balanced diet Energy is provided by carbohydrates Cereals are our daily food Deficiency : Deficiency of carbohydrates may lead to Ketosis.

4 FATS: Source : Dark chocolate, Nuts, Whole eggs. Cheese. Some part of our energy necessity is satisfied by fats Fats are obtained from fatty foods like ghee, butter, oil, cheese etc Deficiency : Deficiency of Fats may lead Underweight, No appetite, skin changes etc.

ORGANIZATION OF BALANCED DIET There are some important ways to organize the balanced diet. These are: Divide the servings tor each meal set a list Determine the number of meals Arrange a food list i.e. list number of quantities from each food group Recheck to assure that all food items are added in required quantity

NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCY Nutritional Deficiency can be very important for the gcneral health of newborm and children because growth and development is inhibited by the lack in essential vitamins or nutrients . Nutritional deficiency means reduced nutritional intake which leads to many diseases.
