ItwasSeptember13,1933whenIndianLibrary
AssociationwasformallyformedattheFirstAllIndia
LibraryConferenceatCalcutta.
Thethreecomponents,namelyTheCouncil,The
ExecutiveCommitteeandtheSectionalCommittees
areresponsibleforPolicymakingandtheexecution
oftheProgrammersofILA.

Sinceinception,ILAisworkingforthedevelopment
ofLibrariesandLibraryMovement,improvement,
statusofLibrarianship/Librariansandstressingfor
bettertrainingfacilitiesforlibrarians.
SincethanILAisworkingasarepresentativebodyof
IndianLibrariansandLibrariesandisdedicatedto
thecauseoflibraries
Ithasmembersfromallpartsofthecountry,
representativesfromalltypesoflibraries.
Objectives of ILA
ThesemembersgavetheAssociationthreefold
objectiveswhichincluded:
(a)thefurtheranceofthelibrarymovementinIndia;
(b)thepromotionofthetrainingoflibrarians;and
(c)theimprovementofthestatusoflibrarians.
In1935twomoreobjectiveswereadded:
(a)promotionofresearchinlibraryscience;and
(b)co-operationwithinternationalorganizations
withsimilarobjectives.
Objectives of ILA
The1970amendment totheconstitutionadded
followingfourmoreobjectives:
(a)publicationofbulletins,periodicals,booksetc.,
whichtendtotherealizationoftheobjectsofthe
association;
(b) establishmentoflibraries,documentation&
information centresand assistancetotheir
establishmentandworking;
(c) promotionofappropriatelibrarylegislationin
India;and
(d)todoallsuchotherthingsasareincidentalof
abovementionedobjects.
Objectives of ILA
TheamendmentdatedJanuary4,1987inthe
constitutionhasaddedthreemoreobjectivesnamely:
(i)providingacommonforumtoallpersonsengaged
orinterestedinlibraryandinformationworkbyholding
conferencesandmeetingsfordiscussionof
professional,technicalandorganisationalissues;
(ii)accreditationofinstitutionsimpartinglibraryand
informationscienceeducationandtraining;and
(iii)promotionaswellasformulationofstandards,
norms,guidelines,etc.formanagementofLibraryand
InformationSystemsandServices.

Activities of the ILA
1.Itholdsgeneralbodymeetingsandaconferenceseveryyear,
includingseminarsonacurrenttopics.
2.Organisingcontinuingeducationprogrammesforworking
librariansandinformationspecialists.
3.Associationwiththeworkingofprofessionalorganisations,
namely,IASLIC,AGLIS,DLA,IATLIS,IFLA,FID,COMLA,etc.
4.WiththefinancialassistancefromtheNISSAT(nowNISCAIR)it
hasbeenorganisingadvancedlevelworkshopsonthe
ApplicationofComputersinLibraryandInformationServicesin
variouscities.
5.TheILAhastakenupconsultancyprojectswithLalBahadur
ShastriNationalAcademyofAdministration,Mussouri,Indian
NationalCentreforArts,NewDelhi,SangeetNatakAcademy,
IGNOUetc.,

6.TheILAgaveallassistanceforpreparationofthefinaldraftof
theNationalPolicyofLibraryandInformationSystem.
7.TheILAtookinitiativeinbringingtheModelActofDr.S.R.
RanganathanandDr.V.Venkatappaiah.AgainthisModelActof
Dr.V.Venkatappaiahwasrestructuredandrevisedin1995as
PublicLibrariesandInformationServicesAct.
8.TheILArepresentedintheGoodOfficesCommitteeofLibraries
andBookTradewhicharrivesatconversionratesforthe
purchaseofForeignbooks.
9.Ithasanawardsprogrammetoo,whorenderedsignificant
contributionintheLibraryandInformationServices.
