INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT OF CHILDHOOD ILLNESS (IMCI) Millions of children die each year in developing countries due to acute respiratory infections, diarrhea, measles, malaria, malnutrition. IMCI developed by WHO and UNICEF. Target children- less than 5 years.
COMPONENTS OF STRATEGY
PREVENTIVE COMPONENT Breast feeding and nutritional counselling. Vitamin A and iron supplementation. Immunization and treatment of Helminthic infestations.
CURATIVE COMPONENT Integrated case management of most common childhood diseases: Diarrhea Malnutrition Measles ARI (pneumonia) Malaria
CASE MANAGEMENT STEPS Assess the child Classify illness Identify treatment Treat the child Counsel mother Give follow up care
INTEGRATED CASE MANAGEMENT PROCESS OPD 1. CHECK FOR DANGER SIGNS: Inability to breast feed/drink Persistent vomiting Severe malnutrition Unconsciousness/lethargy Convulsions
2. ASSESS MAIN SYMPTOMS: Fever Ear problems (otitis media) Difficulty in breathing Diarrhea 3. ASSESS NUTRITION & IMMUNIZATION STATUS
4. CLASSIFY CONDITION: PINK: Urgent referral and emergency treatment YELLOW: Treatment at OPD by giving oral drugs GREEN: Home management can be done by treating local infections at home.
