F amily FAMILY Is the basic social institution and the primary group in society.

Different authors describe family Accdg to Murdok family is a social group characterized by common residence, economic cooperation and reproduction. Accdg to Burges and Locke family is a group of persons united by ties of marriage, blood or adoption, constituting a single household, interacting and communicating with each other in their respective social roles of husband and wife, mother and father, son and daughter, brother and sister, and creating and maintaining a common culture . Accdg and to Murray and Zentner family is a social system and primary reference group made up of two or more persons living together who are related by blood, marriage or adoption or who are living together by arrangement over a period of time.

Composition of family Nuclear family A s being made up of a married couple and their younger children – this groups lives together apart from other relatives, also called conjugal family. Extended family It includes not only the nuclear family but also grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins, also called consanguine family.

Functions of family Essential functions Essential functions are those functions which are basic or fundamental in nature and no other institutions can perform these functions so successfully as family can. Non essential functions These functions are non-essential or secondary in the sense that these are also performed simultaneously by other social institutions in family.

Under essential functions include main functions such as, M arriage Production and rearing of children, Provision of home Socialization Essential functions

Under non-essential or secondary functions include : Economic function, Religious function, Educational function, Health related function, R ecreational functions. Non essential functions
