Social networking sites has become one part of youth's life in variety of forms,
by considering that today's culture is oriented by technology. Now, internet is
more about blogs, podcasts, Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Whatsapp, hike,
Viber , LinkedIn and many more. There are some of the tools and technology
associated with recent fact called social networking and is present everywhere.
Social networking has become part of the daily life experiences for an
increasing number of people. Thanks to the invention of social media, young
men and women now exchange ideas, feelings, personal information, pictures
and videos at a truly beyond belief rate.

Maximum of the time social networking sites are used to communicate
with people who are already their known or friends or relatives or connections
in the social network sharing same mindset or interests, views discussions,
thought process, discussions on debatable topics, news articles, latest updates
on fashion or gadgets are the most common topics on these social media
channels. Social media sites are not only popular for providing a platform for
chatting, sharing scrapes, vides, media clips, voice messages, videos, pictures,
emoji’s etc. but also for discussing hot recent updates and issues. Earlier
people supposed to keep their information and thoughts in private but in today’s
scenario, they all like to go all the details going public and keep blogging and
tweets on social channels. People are keeping themselves busy in viewing wall
posts, status updates, news sharing, media transferring, posing for their display
pics etc. As per the published statistics, number of social network users are
raising their contribution in socializing on these media with a great extent.

WHAT IS MEDIA?
Communication channels through which news, entertainment,
education, data, or promotional messages are disseminated. Media includes
every broadcasting and narrowcasting medium such as newspapers,
magazines, TV, radio, billboards, direct mail, telephone, fax, and internet.
Media is the plural of medium and can take a plural or singular verb, depending
on the sense intended.
Media is the plural form of medium, which (broadly speaking) describes
any channel of communication. This can include anything from printed paper to
digital data, and encompasses art, news, educational content and numerous
other forms of information. Digital media, which makes up an increasingly vast
portion of modern communications, is comprised of intricately encoded signals
that are transmitted over various forms of physical and virtual media, such as
fiber optic cable and computer networks.
Types of media:
Media classified into four categories:
a. Print media (newspaper, magazines)
b. Broadcast media (TV, radio)
c. Outdoor or out of home media
d. Internet

9

WHAT IS SOCIAL MEDIA?
The "social" part: refers to interacting with other people by sharing information
with them and receiving information from them.
The "media" part: refers to an instrument of communication, like (while the
internet TV, radio, and newspapers are examples of more traditional forms of
media).
From these two separate terms, we can pull a basic definition together:
“Social media are web-based communication tools that enable people to
interact with each other by both sharing and consuming information.”

Social media are interactive computer-mediated technologies that
facilitate the creation and sharing of information ideas, career interests and
other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks. The variety of
stand-alone and built-in social media services currently available introduces
challenges of definition; however, there are some common features

o Social media are interactive Internet-based applications.
o User-generated content, such as text posts or comments, digital photos
or videos, and data generated through all online interactions, is the
lifeblood of social media.
o Users create service-specific profiles for the website or app that are
designed and maintained by the social media organization.
o Social media facilitate the development of online social networks by
connecting a user's profile with those of other individuals or groups

10

TOOLS OF SOCIAL MEDIA?
Social media is the collective of online communications channels
dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content-sharing and
collaboration.
Websites and applications dedicated to forums, microblogging, social
networking, social bookmarking, social curation, and wikis are among the
different types of social media.
Here are some prominent examples of social media:
o Facebook: is a popular free social networking website that allows
registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send
messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues.
According to statistics from the Nielsen Group, Internet users within the
United States spend more time on Facebook than any other website.
o Twitter; is a free microblogging service that allows registered members
to broadcast short posts called tweets. Twitter members can broadcast
tweets and follow other users' tweets by using multiple platforms and
devices.
o Google+ :(pronounced Google plus) is Google's social
networking project, designed to replicate the way people interact offline
more closely than is the case in other social networking services. The
project’s slogan is “Real-life sharing rethought for the web.”
o Wikipedia is a free, open content online encyclopedia created through
the collaborative effort of a community of users known as Wikipedians.
Anyone registered on the site can create an article for publication;
registration is not required to edit articles. Wikipedia was founded in
January of 2001.
o LinkedIn: is a social networking site designed specifically for the
business community. The goal of the site is to allow registered members
to establish and document networks of people they know and trust
professionally.

11

o Reddit: is a social news website and forum where stories are socially
curated and promoted by site members. The site is composed of
hundreds of sub-communities, known as "subreddits." Each subreddit
has a specific topic such as technology, politics or music. Reddit site
members, also known as, "redditors," submit content which is then voted
upon by other members. The goal is to send well-regarded stories to the
top of the site's main thread page.
o Pinterest: is a social curation website for sharing and categorizing
images found online. Pinterest requires brief descriptions but the main
focus of the site is visual. Clicking on an image will take you to the
original source, so, for example, if you click on a picture of a pair of
shoes, you might be taken to a site where you can purchase them. An
image of blueberry pancakes might take you to the recipe; a picture of a
whimsical birdhouse might take you to the instructions.

SOME OF THE KNOWN ISSUES WITH SOCIAL MEDIA???
Social media isn't all just fun and games with your friends, celebrities you
admire, and brands you follow. There are lots of common problems that most
major social media platforms haven't totally solved, despite their effort to do so.
o Spam: Social media makes it easy for spammers – both real people
and bots – to bombard other people with content. If you have a
Twitter account, you've probably experienced a few spambot follows
or interactions. Likewise, if you run a WordPress blog, you may have
gotten a spam comment or two caught by your spam filter.
o Cyberbullying/Cyberstalking: Children and teenagers are
especially susceptible to cyberbullying because they take more risks
when it comes to posting on social media. And now that we all
interact on social media via our mobile devices, most major platforms
make it possible to share our locations, opening up the doors for
cyberstalks to target us.
o Self-image manipulation: What a user posts about themselves on
social media only represents a small portion of their life. While
followers may see someone who's happy and living it up via their
posts on social media in such a way that makes them feel boring or
inadequate by comparison, the truth is that users have the power to
completely control what parts they do and don't want to broadcast on
social media to manipulate their own self-image.
o Fake news: Fakes new websites promote links to their own totally
false news stories on social media in order to drive traffic to them.
Many users have no idea that they're fake in the first place.
o Privacy/Security: Many social media platforms still get hacked from
time to time despite having good security measures in place. Some
also don't offer all the privacy options that users need to keep their
information as private as they want them to be.

13

14

INFLUENCE OF SOCIAL MEDIA ON YOUTH
Social media today has become a prominent part of people and mostly
the youth. I personally use Social media for more than 3 hours a day. So, In a
world where looking cool in pictures on social media has more importance than
being genuine, one can certainly say that social media has a heavy influence
on youth.
As Mark Zuckerberg once said,
“People Influence People. Nothing influences nothing more than a
recommendation from a trusted friend”
And for our knowledge, we are the people having our heads towards the
screens using social media. So, definitely social media influences youth
(people)
Today I am going to write on the influence of social media on youth from both
the aspects i.e.
1. Positive influence of social media on youth.
2. Negative influence of social media on youth.

Positive influence of social media on youth
Talking from an optimistic point of view. These are some of the positive
influence of social media on the youth.
1) Education:
o Studying from sites like Google, Youtube, Quora etc. is “The Place” to
gain knowledge. Students can easily collaborate with their teachers via
this platform at any hour of the day and solve their problems. Not in my
college but programs like “Study from home” are arranged for
educational purposes in many major educational institutes. Not only can
you gain knowledge but you can share opinions/knowledge on sites like
Quora. Because “Knowledge increase by sharing not by saving”-Lyrikal

16

2) Relationships
“Social media puts the ‘Public’ in Public relation and ‘Market’ in the Marketing”
The positive upside of entrepreneurship and startups have baffled today’s
youth. In the world where many of youngsters including me want to be a
“Startup founder”, building relationships is the first priority for success. And
social media helps to build those relationships like,
o Engaging with the audience.
o Providing value via constant posts and answers.
o Using hashtags to find potential customers and build relations.
For personal users rather than business,
o Wanna talk to mother face to face *Opens Skype*
o Wanna chat with friends *Opens WhatsApp*
o Making unknown people friends via social media is also an upside.
3) Job opportunities
“Not everyone wants to be a business owner”. With heavy use of social media
by the youth, recruiters recruit many candidates via social media:
o Employers find their employee and Employee to find their employers via
Social media like Linkedin, Facebook, etc.
o Sites like naukri.com avails enormous amount of Job opportunities for
today’s youth. Or sites like freelancer.com helps you pay your bills by
freelancing.
4) Always in touch with the world
Believe it or not, though social media seems to disconnect people from the
surrounding. It connects people to the world.
o World news reaches in seconds after incidents via social media with the
speed of light.

17

o Live streaming of events via Facebook Live or Instagram Live connects
the people all around the world.
o Important people who can’t afford to come to a small ceremony due to
some reason can see these ceremonies via social media.
5) influences to exercise
First of all, This part can be considered from both perspectives: Positive and
Negative.
In a world where looking cool in pictures and selfies on social media has more
importance than being a genuine person, people tend to make their body look
cool. To make a body look cool people workout, join Gyms, engage in physical
activities, etc.
Hence, Influence of social media on youth not only affects the mind but also
help them build a physical structure.
6) Social media as e-commerce
“Time is our most valuable asset, yet we tend to waste it, kill it and spend it
rather than invest it.” – Jim Rohn
Similar to influence for the workout, Influence of social media as e-commerce
can be divided into Both perspectives. Consequently, Talking from an optimistic
point of view influence of social media as e-commerce can be,
o People can buy things while riding back home from offices rather than
spending 2-3 hours in the market.
o Specifically, in the generation of youths where “Time is the most valuable
asset” e-commerce sites like Amazon helps youth to innovate and invent
providing time.
o More choices of books, electronics, and other stuff is a plus point. for eg.
If I don’t get a book from the nearby bookstore, Amazon will have it.

18

7) Development of discussion:
Network provides the opportunity of the open communication, to discuss ideas,
share links, to wide business tricks, and number of others. It is the very
important benefit of the social media, which cannot be denied. There should be
more improvement in the means of the communication for efficient and secure
communication.
Social media sites are providing a great platform where a man can debate and
share his views about anything which is not found at any other place. At the
social media site we can meet and talk with the people of different thinking and
from different culture. So with sharing personal views and experiences a man
can get mental satisfaction at the same time it can get the important
information’s. Social media is also very important between an organization. It is
using to share the views, advance message and output distributing information
between different groups in a quick way.
8) Information communicated too quickly
With this new comfort of contact to material, complications have increased.
Because we must have to do an extra severe work of confirming facts about
information that we bargain on the internet. The access of the information has
become instant and quick with the efficient source of the social media. But it is
also very easy to allocate all kinds of books physically deprived of being
specialists on a specific topic. There are many chances that may be the data
we find on social networks is not precise. At the end, we have to face the insult
before others on the basis of this data.
This thing has caused the major disturbance that we are deprived of the source
of actual information. There should be any serious measure to sort out this
problem of the concerning authorities. It is important to verify all the data
information uploaded of the site. So that we can save our actual values and the
information regarding everything.

19

9) Awareness/Being Informed:
27.8% of Americans get their news online. (28.8% get it from newspapers and
18.8% from radio.). Information spreads faster online than any other media.
More than 50% learn about breaking news on social media. Social networking
provides academic research to everyone with online access, allowing people
access to previously unavailable resources. Social media sites inform and
empower individuals to change themselves and their communities.

20

Negative influence of social media on youth
Talking from a pessimistic point of view. Here are some of the negative
influence of social media on the youth.
1) Effects on physical fitness
Contrary to How Social media forces you to be fit, it also makes you lazy as
shit. If person have no mobile that time generally use to go out and play in open
grounds, sit out in the fresh air and enjoy cool breeze during summer nights, sit
under the tree and talk with friends. When with having mobile generally ignore
friends call to play outside I would ignore them by some excuses, and watch a
new video on YouTube rather than play outside so.. person became more and
more engagements with technology my stamina has become shitty and he/she
will be lost energy due to overuse of social media. Although, social media helps
me mentally at the expense of physical fitness. Hence, the influence of social
media on youth ‘s life can depend on how you see it.
2) Negative effects of e-commerce
Although e-commerce has own advantages like enormous options, 24-7-365
services, saving time, etc. Youths today use this e-commerce sites to buy
unnecessary fancy things like,
o Ooh! Robert Downey Jr. wears that watch. Let me buy one.
o WoW, that’s brand new earphone. Let’s buy one.
People unaware of real price and authenticity of the product can be tricked
through e-commerce. Other issues like privacy, security of debit cards, etc. can
also be considered in negative influence of e-commerce on youth.

21

3) Identity theft, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying
I. Identity Theft
Youngsters unaware of privacy settings posts their identity on any kind
of social media and can easily be a victim of identity theft. Hence, the risk of
disclosing personal information is always there on social media. Your personal
information can be used to make fake accounts on the internet and much more
as a result. So, stay aware!
II. Cyber Stalking
The stalking term means “Pursue or follow stealthily” and doing this via
social media and internet is called cyberstalking.
for eg: You are sitting in a restaurant and posted it on ‘Twitter’ probability of
your ex-boyfriend/girlfriend to show up will increase. And that would be weird,
won’t it?. That’s for the fun but let’s consider this example, You posted “Eating
pizza at XYZ with family ” and a thief is cyber stalking you and he came to know.
So at that time while you are eating Pizza happily, the thief is probably raiding
your house.
III. Cyber Bullying
Criminals can threat other peoples for doing their work or giving money via
social media like Messengers or WhatsApp. This kind of Bullying via social
media is called Cyber Bullying. There are a large number of online predators
who take advantage of the immediacy afforded by the cyber space. Even kids
are becoming prey to several instances of cyber bullying. These evil doers
initially build up the trust of individuals and later reveal their real faces and
ulterior motives of the relationships established. The devastating impact of such
invasions into their private lives have driven people even to commit suicide.
Estimates reveal that over 42 percent of youth have fallen prey to cyber
bullying.

22

4) Misinformation:
Enables the spread of false rumors and unreliable information: 49.1% of users
have read false news on social media. Encourages amateur medical advice
and self-diagnosis of health problems, which can be dangerous and life-
threatening.
5) Decreased Productivity
While businesses are offering internet connectivity to facilitate various tasks
that need to happen online, most employees tend to misuse the access to social
media during office hours and therefore report less productivity. A number of
studies conducted worldwide in this connection have revealed that even leading
businesses have lost billions due to this factor. Though there are new
technologies that can block social networks, the question regarding their
effectiveness still remains unsolved.
6) Security and Privacy:
Security issues happen when any hacker interrupts the Site’s sheltered coding
and the written languages. It all happen with illegal ways, if anybody want to get
access on that data. In the privacy problem somebody gets the unjustified
charge to the private data which disturb the system. Social media gives
permission to everyone to come in contact and detailed information. With these
communications some people can harm the system using wrong and unethical
ways. As in today’s life everyone loves to use Facebook, want to like and share
images, posts and other interesting things. Because there are varieties iy6fdof
thing and everyone has access to them. It also shows the records of the site
which you visit before. People, especially the young, are often too open and
public with personal information when online. Most don't read privacy policies
and may be unaware that their information may be used by third parties, like
advertisers, insurance companies, and the IRS. 21% of teens believe it is safe
and harmless to post personal information, including photos.

23

7) Increased the Stress:
It is revealed form research that social media causes the high-level stress. As
42% people are in stress due to the bad impacts of the social media. The 18-
34 years youngsters are most entangling with this social pressure. Social
media’s stress also effect the health of the human beings in many dangerous
ways. As the impacts of the social media are burdened, Random and
uncontainable. Nervousness, bodily disease and sadness have increased due
to the bad effects of the social media. These bad impacts are causing the
cardiovascular diseases and other infectious disease.
It is not good for the young generation as it is affecting their abilities.
Furthermore, it is the great disadvantage of the social media, increasing day to
day. We should have changed our routines and habits to avoid such dangerous
harms which are so much injurious for our health and skills.
8) Spend less quality time with your beloved ones:
With our portable devices, social networks are now available everywhere. It is
therefore very easy to live in the virtual. And not to live quite the current moment
as dinner with friends or personal seminars. They often change with people who
are linked to their Facebook accounts in its place of relishing the actions with
your relatives and beloved ones. It has the advantage and the disadvantage at
the same time because in today’s life children are also indulging greatly with
the social media. They are avoiding the family members which is dangerous for
the children and the surrounding relations.
It is the major loss of the social media because we are going far from our moral
values and our loved ones. It is the reason that clashes between the relations
are increasing day to day. Time is very important to maintain our relations best.
We should try our best to solve this issue to give the important time to family
members and to avoid any irrelevant activities.

24

9)Adverse effects on sleep:
A study directed at the Irvine University of California (UCI) displays that
absence of sleep can be related to a lengthier attendance on the net.
Furthermore, particularly on social networks like Facebook. Afterward
captivating into version various issues such as sex, age, abstract assignment
and exam dates. The results presented a direct connection among a lack of
long-lasting sleep, deprived of good mood, inferior productivity and Amplified
period on Facebook. A study in the Periodical of Child Neurology also showed
that teenagers who continual send text messages at night after turn-off the
lights in their places had inferior class sleep and lower marks.
Their outcomes showed that once the lights died out, blue light produced from
smart phones and tablets strengthened, postponing the emissions of melatonin,
the sleep hormone. This light thus interrupts the series of sleep and the
excellence of the last. It will be renowned that the blue light produced the
displays. It can disturb the manufacture of sleeping hormone even when the
eyelids are locked.
10) A Waste of Time:
When alerted to a new post or tweet, it takes about 20 to 25 minutes for
the average user to return to their original task. 30% of the time it takes two
hours for the user to return to their original task. Many students find it difficult
to go about their normal life without making use of social media. It has been
observed that student does not listen in class, they are busy chatting and
reading stories online. They waste their time chatting with friends and families,
instead of reading and practicing what they have learned in school.

25

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, wrapping up all the “Influence of social media on youth” thing.
One can use social media in any way they want. Influence of social media on
youth will remain How they use and think about Social media. Influence of social
media on me is that I use social media for entertainment, knowledge, and
Marketing.
The youth today is not only aware of what fits in best for them but are also keen
and enthusiastic to draw their own priorities and fix on to which ones are most
important and how. However, social networking sites offer them a platform to
connect with new people, share experiences and gain exposure. The youth
comes to terms with gaining relevant and quick information about what goes
around in their near and dear ones’ lives through the source of social
networking sites offering them a ground to updates.
The youth can thus discriminate between the real and virtual world and admits
to the fact that social networking sites do not provide an opportunity to build
stronger contacts with people than in person. The level of trust and faith weighs
higher on their contact building in the real world than in virtual for the plain
reason of cybercrimes still attacking a significant number of people which has
thereby been justified in the findings.
Perhaps, like a coin with two sides, social networking sites also have in their
own way adversely affected the youth. The youth have determined their own
boundaries and have set their own limits as to how and when to use social
media irrespective of the positive and negative effects it imparts. The youth
today is not only techno savvy and socially existent but also embodies social
consciousness.
