INTRODUCTION One of the most ancient craft known to mankind Bees belongs to order Hymenoptera Over 20,000 species of bees are available worldwide Rearing of honey bees on a commercial scale is apiculture Becoming popular in Nepal because of its honey and wax production and awareness of educated people in pollination of cultivated plants

IMPORTANCE Pollination Honeybees pollination activities worth 143 times than the value of honey and wax they produce Bee pollinated crops provides 1/3 of our total diet directly or indirectly Bee pollination results yield increase over 50% in some crops Honey : A valuable energetic and healthy food

IMPORTANCE… Used in many festivals and many occasions Used as food: 200 gm of honey is as nourishing as 1.135 kg of milk or 340 gm of meat or 8 oranges or 10 eggs Wax and other products: Bee wax, propolis, pollen and royal jelly, these product have many uses and used to create income Wax used for preparing comb foundation of artificial hives

6. IMPORTANCE… Refined wax used in preparation of cosmetics, ointments, plasters and surgical dressings and making candles Few resources required: Bee keeping feasible even for people with minimum resources Equipments and tools for beekeeping made locally Bee obtained from wild

7. IMPORTANCE… Nectar and pollen: Nectar and pollen, the valuable resources could not be harvested without bees Medicinal value: Honey used as laxative, as blood purifier, as preventive against cold, cough and fever Honey used as sugar substitute for diabetic patient

IMPORTANCE… Bee wax has antibiotic properties hence used for arthritis and nasal inflammation Propolis has bactericidal, fungicidal and antiviral effects Cosmetic value: Honey used as beauty and face pack in beauty parlor Applying honey mixed with almond oil on the face help to tone the skin and improve complexion

9. IMPORTANCE… Encourages ecological awareness to conserve the environment Benign and environmental friendly Beneficial for different sectors and trade Helps in enhancing local skills, knowledge and traditions

10. IMPORTANCE… Can be easily integrated with crop farming as beekeeping does not compete with other agricultural activities
