Hand Hygiene & Its Importance
In Infection Control
PRESENTED BY: MUHAMMAD HAMZA SHAHID

OBJECTIVES
After completing the lecture students will be able to:
Understand the importance of hand hygiene in healthcare settings.
Identify types of microorganisms commonly found on hands.
Learn effective handwashing techniques and guidelines.

IMPORTANCE OF HAND HYGIENE
Hand hygiene is one of the most crucial practices in preventing the
spread of infections and maintaining overall health. Here are some
reasons highlighting its importance:
•Prevents Healthcare-Associated Infections (HAIs): Reduces the
spread infections in healthcare settings.
•Protects Patients & Healthcare Workers: Minimizes the risk of
transmitting pathogens.
•Breaks the Chain of Infection: Stops the spread of infectious agents
from one person to another.

STATISTICS ON HAND HYGIENE
•Infection: up to 70% of HAIs can be prevented with proper hand hygiene.
•Compliance: Despite its importance, hand hygiene compliance rates among healthcare workers
are often below 50%.

COMMON MICRO -ORGANISMS ON HAND
•Bacteria:
•Staphylococcus aureus
•Escherichia coli
•Viruses:
•Influenza
•Norovirus
•Fungi:
•Candida species
Staphylococcus Escherichia
InfluenzaNorovirus
Candida

HOW MICRO-ORGANISMS SPREAD
•Direct Contact: Touching an Infected
Person.
•Indirect Contact: Touching contaminated
surfaces or objects.
•Respiratory Droplets: Coughing or
sneezing.

WHEN TO PERFORM HAND HYGIENE
•Before & After:
•Patient contact.
•Wearing gloves.
•Invasive procedures.
•After:
•Contact with body fluids.
•Contact with contaminated surfacecs.

HAND WASHING TECHNIQUES
•Step-by-Step Guide:
1.Wet hand with clean, running water.
2.Apply soap and lather well.
3.Scrub all surfaces for at least 20 seconds.
4.Rinse thoroughly under running water.
5.Dry hands with a clean towel or air dry.

HAND WASHING GUIDELINES
•Duration: Wash hands for at least 20 seconds.
•Soap Type: Use plain or antimicrobial soap.
•Rubbing Technique: Focus on all parts of hands,
including nails and between fingers.

ALCOHOL-BASED HAND SANITIZERS
•When to Use: If soap and water are not available.
•Effective Against: Most bacteria and virus.
•Technique:
•Apply enough product to cover all surfaces.
•Rub hands together until dry (about 20 seconds).

ROLE OF HEALTHCARE WORKERS
•Lead by Example: Practice and good hand
hygiene.
•Educate Others: Teach patients and families about
hand hygiene.
•Regular Monitoring: Ensure compliance with
hand hygiene protocols.

KEY POINTS
•Hand hygiene is crucial in preventing the spread of infections.
•Common microorganisms in hands can cause serious health issues.
•Proper handwashing and the use of hand sanitizer are effective methods to maintain hand
hygiene.
