WEANING Weaning means- to free from a habit. Weaning is the process of gradual decrease of breast feeding and gradual increase of semi-solid food. Weaning is defined as “the systematic process of introduction of suitable food at the right time in addition to mothers milk in order to provide needed nutrients to the baby”.(UNICEF, 1984)
IMPORTANCE OF WEANING Increasing needs for energy(calories). Growing baby requires more minerals and vitamins. To train the child on spoon feeding, chewing, and swallowing of solid food. To train the gastrointestinal tract to digest starch and other solid foods. To educate the child independence by using spoon and cup to feed himself. Milk is a poor source of iron.so weaning food is need to get the iron. For rapid growth and brain development.
CONT…. To gains more confidence and improves personality. To provide a break from feeding duties and can have some time for herself . To learn to eat in a social setting, with other people around a table which is extremely important for their cognitive and social development. To learn to chew and swallow before the end of their first year.
ANC VISIT ANC means antenatal care ,also known as prenatal care. Antenatal care refers to the education, supervision, treatment and care given to an expectant mother from the time of conception is confirmed until the beginning of labor. It includes monitoring the progress of pregnancy, providing appropriate support to the women and her family and providing information, which will assist them to make sensible choices .
DEFINITION OF ANC “It is planned examination, observation and guidance given to the pregnant woman from conception till the time of labor.” Comprehensive health supervision of a pregnant woman before delivery.
ANTENATAL VISITS The who recommends that pregnant women should all receive four antenatal visits to spot and treat problems and give immunizations. Although antenatal care is important to improve the health of both mother and baby, many women do not receive four visits.
CONT…. First visit: as soon as confirmation of pregnancy or before 4months Second visit: 20-28 weeks or during 6months(24-28weeks) Third visit: 34-36 weeks or before 8 months Fourth visit: before expected date of delivery or when the pregnant woman feels she needs to consult health worker or during 9months.
CONT…. Every woman should have a record file and every event should be written in it. If pregnancy is passing uneventfully these visits are enough but if complications arise we need more visits.
IMPORTANCE OF ANC VISIT To ensure that the pregnant woman and her fetus are in the best possible health. To detect early and treat properly complications. Offering education for parenthood To prepare the woman for labor, lactation and care of her infant. To screen the high risk cases and provide special attention .
CONT…. To counsel about birth preparedness and complication readiness as any pregnancy may develop complication at any time. To educate the woman about the importance of birth spacing, the availability and use of different family planning methods. To prevent congenital deformities by educating mothers not to expose themselves by taking medication or substances which may be teratogens. To make plans to educate the woman and her family in order to take appropriate action when complications arise.
