British officers in India played a game called Poona, which
involved a shuttlecock and rackets.
Early 19th century
1873
The game was introduced to England at the Duke of Beaufort's estate
in Badminton House, giving the sport its modern name.
1877
The first written rules of badminton were
established by the Bath Badminton Club in
England.
