our oﬃce is your professional home. If calculated,
an average nine-to-ﬁve oﬃce-going working
professional spends over 1,00,000 hours or almost
one-third of his lifetime in an oﬃce. Many of them start
working as soon as they graduate and keep on working after

A Visionary Leader
Bhutesh, who hails from Rhenock, Khamdong, a remote
border village of Sikkim, has spent his childhood and done
his schooling from Rhenock itself. Coming from a non-
business family, things were not easy, and access to
knowledge and information was very limited.
It was a sin to dream big of starting a business, especially
when your family is not ﬁnancially well oﬀ. The only way
to get out of this vicious circle was education which he
focused on.
Discarding the social norms, he focused on studies and did
his B.Tech from NIT Surat, Gujarat. Although his
entrepreneurial spirit was high right from childhood, he
decided to continue his education. He did his MBA in
Marketing from XIMB, one of the reputed management
colleges of India.
Before venturing into his own business, he worked for an
Indian MNC Feedback Infra at Gurgaon as an infra
consultant for around two years, closely working with the
government authorities and private ﬁrms.
It was 2019 when he came to know about his alum and
college senior, Mr Nishant Gupta, who worked in the
interiors industry for the last decade and founded Simply
Interiors in 2017.
Mr Bhutesh joined Simply Interiors as a Co-founder in
2019. He primarily looked after the sales, which is the
pinpoint to the success of any ﬁrm. Simply Interiors got a
new spirit, and since then, despite the COVID pandemic,
the company has performed well.
The duo alum of XIMB, Mr Nishant and Mr Bhutesh,
scaled Simply Interiors to a new height. Now, Mr Bhutesh
is director and one of the shareholders in the company,
which has been converted to Pvt ltd company and goes by
the name of Crimsone Interior Design Pvt Ltd with Simply
Interiors as its registered trademark brand.
While Mr Nishant puts his expertise on branding,
marketing, and growth of the company, Mr Bhutesh looks
after sales, operation, and overall management of the
company.
The motivation behind Simply Interiors
Sharing his inspiration behind venturing into the interior
designing industry, Bhutesh stated, “Interior Industry is
cluttered with many national and local players. It is also the
livelihood of many small-town carpenters. But the industry
is also swindled around the cost and materials being used.”
“Interior is one of the highest ticket-sized industries where
homeowners may spend their fortune buying a ﬂat and
doing its interior. There is a trade-oﬀ between a good,
spacious ﬂat or a premium interior.”
The situation is such that, when you buy a spacious ﬂat at a
good locality from a reputed builder at a higher cost, you
are now left with less budget for the interior. When you buy
a budget ﬂat, you have a substantial budget for the interior.
The majority of the homeowner decide on the former.
Therefore, a situation is created where a homeowner is left
with a limited budget for the interior. This is where Simply

Sharing the initial challenges after venturing into the ﬁeld

With no prior projects to showcase, things were tough.
Gradually, from references and known contacts, a few
projects were done, which was then the testimonial of the
work and commitments.

checks, and timely project delivery became another
challenge that was resolved by introducing the technology
in their processes.”
With all the process set and tech support in the present
scenario, the ﬁrm is now ready for expansion beyond the
three cities of Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Pune. The current

Opinion that matters
Technology is something that both the founders of Simply
Interiors are well aware of. The ﬁrm is using the basic
technology of machines in the factory and their automation

Project processes, timeline, procurement, and workﬂow
monitored by the support of technology are already in
practice in the ﬁrm. Founders are well aware of major
technological advancements of virtual reality where
designing is possible. Customers can get a realistic view of
their homes even before the actual work is done.
That brings a new revolution in the industry. Many free and
paid tools are available in the market through which, such
designing can be achieved. But technology has its limits.
The technology alone cannot achieve any premium work
with outstanding designs. Skilled manpower and freehand
work are required for such customers. Many competitors
and reputed industry leaders struggle here at this point.
Most of the competitors focus on only machine-assisted
modular work, which cannot achieve all the aspects of
designing a brilliant house. Hence, the ﬁrm strategies its
operation with a mix of technology and freehand manpower
skills, both of which are essential for a house to be
beautifully constructed.
The ﬁrm is also working on the virtual reality and complete
home automation solution, which is foreseen as the future
of the interior designing industry.

Sharing his advice to the aspirants who are willing to
venture into the ﬁeld of interior designing, Bhutesh stated,
“Interior designing as a career is a promising ﬁeld. Where
thousands of ﬂats are being sold every month in each city,
designing of the house is required.”

look should be seamless and should not seem like two units
forcefully combined into one. Work started with demolishing
the common wall and joining the two living rooms. Since
there was a level diﬀerence in the ﬂoors of the two ﬂats, the
ﬂooring also had to be changed, which also served the purpose
of creating a seamless look.
Similarly, a false ceiling was set up to create a continuous look
despite a beam running at the common wall. As work
progressed, the Client requested furniture in all the four
bedrooms had to be re-done as well. At the same time, the
second kitchen was already decided to have ﬂoor-to-ceiling
storage in carpentry to suﬃce for a complete storeroom and
also as a Mandir room.
SJD suggested the Client to design an elegant mandir and shift
it to the super huge new Hall and shift all the existing almirahs
and cupboards to the storeroom so that it is purely a
storeroom. This step resulted in releasing a budget of almost
1.75 lakhs to partly compensate for the additional costs of
furnishing bedrooms and also utilizing existing facilities. SJD
also suggested panelling to the entrance of the storeroom such
that the door cannot be easily made out. Relevant images are

Overcoming the Adversities
There are some challenges inherent to this ﬁeld that would be
there in every project - Earning the trust of Clients is of
absolute importance since that drives the experience. This
challenge is all the more pronounced in turn-key projects due
to the numerous dimensions involved – trust has to be earned
and maintained on the Costing, designing abilities to balance
functionality and looks, participation in choice of materials,
supervision on the use of materials, supervision on
Workmanship, co-ordination between diﬀerent teams, and
ﬁnally meeting the timelines.
There are also disruptive challenges of new alternatives
coming into the market almost every other day – one needs to
know each of these to adopt them into projects where they
would best serve the purpose.
Also, there are common challenges of maintaining the team,
load balancing between them while working on multiple
projects, Employee turnover, Ever increasing costs, timely
availability of material which otherwise has a direct impact on
the Designer's margin, and so on.
Evolving Around the Emerging Technologies
Technological advancements have played an essential role in
the ﬁeld of Interior Designing. 3D software has made it easier
for designers to communicate their ideas. Depending on the
software used, a designer can generate an image very close to
how would be the overall look once the project is over. This
gives the client an opportunity to digest the design. Clients are
more receptive to this since they know that this is not ﬁnal yet
and changes can be made.
Also, technological advancements have created a whole lot of
variety in ﬁnished goods with mirror ﬁnishes, digital prints,
quick installation, space-saving hardware like folding and
stacking beds, multi-purpose furniture like sofa-cum-beds,
single-cum-double beds, sitting-cum-storages, etc.

addressing the clients' requirements. While proposing
designing solutions, functional aspects like low/zero

Payal Kapoor, Director at VISIONS Interior Designers
& Consultants, always looked at the world as an open
canvas, where she could mould the interiors of the human
space-time as per the vistas of her own visionary torques.

Sensing a magniﬁcent creative spirit in her, after graduation
from the Interiors School in 1987, the Executive Director of
one of the leading Interior Designers in Delhi handpicked
her. After getting suﬃcient exposure at Manasara, she was
oﬀered a challenging opportunity by the 'Dream City'
promoters and was appointed by them as senior advisor of
their design ﬁrm 'Craftsmen'. The projects by this ﬁrm
mainly were executed on a turnkey basis.

Under Payal's supervision, the company diversiﬁed from
making panel doors and windows to excellent quality
furniture and executed several projects on a Turnkey basis.
Payal reﬂects, "After putting my eﬀorts, I felt that my
creativity and identity as an interior designer were
infringed upon. Hence, I decided to launch my own in 1991
and founded 'Visions'."
Thus, began the process of institutionalization of Payal's
Design Genius. Guided by her creative instinct, Payal
designed some of the best iconic structures in and around
India.
They include luxury trains like Palace on Wheels and
Sambhar Express, over twenty hotels and royal palaces,
six schools, twelve oﬃces such as TATA's corporate oﬃce
and Reliance Industries' New Delhi oﬃce, forty residences
including French Embassy Guest House in Chanakyapuri,
New Delhi, Mint Casino Ship, PVR Mega Mall, Gurgaon,
ﬁve showrooms including IGI Airport Departure, etc.

Payal has also received numerous awards, including WADe
Asia 2018, Baron's Who's Who (USA) of the World Global
Edition, Excellence in Architecture & Design at the Festival
of Architecture & Interior Designing (FOAID) 2019, etc.

In an exclusive interview with CIOLOOKINDIA for its
edition of 'India's Brilliant Interior Designers-2022', Payal
spoke in length and breadth about her VISIONS. Highlights
of that sparkling discussion are given ahead.
Please brief our audience about Visions, its USPs, and
how it is currently positioned as a leading player in the
Architecture and Interior Designing space.
My company, VISIONS, was incorporated in 1990 as an
Interior arch Design proprietor ﬁrm. Having specialized in
hotels and hospitality, I started executing hotel projects like
Umaid Bawan palace, Imperial hotel, and a lot of heritage
hotels across India but landed up doing schools like GD
Goenka, ITL, etc., Institutes, spas, luxury trains like Palace
on wheels, sambhar express, ships like mint casino in goa.
All sorts of luxury homes, oﬃces, saloons, and diverse
kinds of work have been done by Visions over the last 35
years.

What was your inspiration behind venturing into the
Architecture and Interior Designing niche?
No inspiration as such entering this ﬁeld. I guess it just
grew on me, and as good projects came my way, I tried to

execute the same honestly, and recognition and fame

What USPs make you stand out as a leading Interior
Designer?
I do not impose my design ideas on any client and try to
incorporate their style and needs in the ﬁnal design. I prefer
to work as a team to achieve the end result as per their
sensibilities.
It is important to adapt to the client's needs, budget
timelines aesthetics, and handholding them till the end. And
I guess that's what makes us diﬀerent.
What are the immersive beneﬁts of the services/solutions
you provide to your clients?
With us, the client does not have to look for ppl to execute
their work as we have a house team of civil, interiors, and
landscape ﬁt-outs. It is a one-stop-shop, so the clients have
no headaches as they are dealing with only one person.
What were the initial challenges after venturing into the
ﬁeld, and what are the challenges now?
Thirty years back, challenges were of diﬀerent kinds.
Communication was slow, no internet, WhatsApp,
smartphones etc.
There was a lot of dependency on research through books
library, and we were totally hands-on, and speed slowed
down as communications were physical or through
landlines.
Now the info is at a click of a button, and the digital world
has made things easy, and coordination is simpler.
However, nowadays, most designers cut-copy-paste, which
shows in their work.
What would be your advice to the aspirants who are
willing to venture into the ﬁeld of the Interior Designing
market?
Young designers need to focus on research before starting a
project and before they start designing it. Focus, hard work
and honesty have no shortcuts and staying humble and
working as a team always helps maintain timelines and
execute designs immaculately with good artistry.

Architecture, Mumbai, in 1992, successfully topped in the
state of Maharashtra. He then completed his Master of
Science in Architecture (M. S. Arch.) from California
Polytechnic State University, USA, in 1994. He worked
with various Architects in the USA before returning to
Mumbai.

On the academic front, he was also a visiting lecturer at the
Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute of Architecture and
Environmental Studies, Juhu, Mumbai. On several
occasions, he has been a “Design Jury” at many
Architecture Colleges to evaluate and encourage young
students and speak on Architecture and Interior Designing
at various forums, including social forums like the “Rotary
Club.”
Anita Shah completed her G.D. Arch from L.S. Raheja
School of Architecture, Mumbai, in 1992. Apart from
Architecture and Interior Design, she is also very insightful
in the ﬁeld of Vaastu Shastra and Graphic Design. She too
has been a part of the “Design Jury” at several Architecture
Colleges and commercial forums.
They started the ﬁrm M/s SSA Design Studio (Architects,

Sandeep reminisces their initial days of being fortunate
enough to have travelled extensively locally and
internationally since school days. Both were fascinated by
building designs and intrigued by interior spaces on their
various trips and tried to dissect how these spaces must
have been designed and put together.
Architecture and interior design thus became a natural
choice. This profession combines design and engineering,
and as it caters to people, it has to be safe and aesthetically
pleasing. Architects and interior designers make sculpture
liveable. The best part about this profession is that the
design would also be there for future generations to revere
and learn from.

Creativity is the backbone of any form of design. Creativity
is what diﬀerentiates good design from the rest. It can
transform spaces, inﬂuence perspectives, even make history

Sandeep and Anita try to create spaces to have a “timeless”

Their daily purview leads to healthy discussions in all
aspects of designing and execution, resulting in a reliable
partnership. This helps build “trust” – and in their ﬁeld,
where the stakes are high–trust is the key to a successful
project. Hence, they get repeat projects from clients.
Rising and Growing From Challenges
Anita elaborated about their initial days; they were
brimming with ideas and enthusiasm. It took a lot of
convincing to clients to secure projects as one would rarely
have a body of work to show for in the initial stages of their
career.
But their never-give-up attitude helped them bag good
projects, both in architecture and interiors, which were also
featured in various design publications. She exclaimed that
since then, there was no looking back. It’s been almost three
decades, and their team still has the same ﬁre and
enthusiasm for every project they do.
In general, procurement of consistent quality material from
reliable sources to managing after-sales services from
vendors and contractors were the most concerning
challenges in the initial years. But this also taught them to
be more eﬃcient and prudent in their design and build
process.
Anita responded on the present day, more than ever before,
is the best time to be in this creative ﬁeld with tremendous
help from technology, amazing work happening in research
and development across the production spectrum and
exposure to a huge variety of data.
Ironically, the current challenges involve dissuading clients
from incorporating some design idea they would have come
across in the media but happens to be an absolute out of
place concept as per their overall theme.
Today there is an overexposure to everything, and one
needs to be knowledgeable enough to evaluate this data,
from temporary fashion fads to timeless beauty. Each
design idea is worthy – however, it requires an appropriate
ambience to enhance its value and look in-sync.

The Technological Impact
Sandeep mentioned that technological advancements have
indeed opened many avenues. They still believe that hand
sketching is the best form of transforming ideas - on paper.
A host of software are available for 2D and 3D visualization
to take the design process to the next level. Clients can
preview their projects before execution.

Sandeep added that with the 4D immersive technology in
the metaverse, one can be “within” the space and feel the
“walk-throughs.” The software that translates 2D to 3D
instantly is widely used to eliminate unforeseen errors
during construction.

A team of multiple designers can now co-work on a given
project ﬁle simultaneously, thereby saving time, improving
precision, and saving cost while generating the best results.
The computer revolution has been a game-changer.
Communication with clients has become much more
manageable. Several complex building designs which are
built around the world today would not have been possible
without these tools.
Unique materials have ﬂooded the market, which use
technology to aid their manufacturing processes, giving
designers various choices. One material could undergo
diﬀerent ﬁnishing treatments and result in multiple unique
ﬁnishes. The base material could be the same, say marble or
glass, but with other speciﬁc treatments, the result is
amazing.
It is now easier to recreate aﬀordable designs, whether
digital printed artworks or exclusive marble print tiles,
thereby opening newer possibilities for designers to provide
exclusiveness even in a budget job. Technology has made
the visibility of an idea easier, leading to better knowledge
sharing, easy procurement, and a transparent market.

Pearls of Wisdom
Anita pointed out with enthusiasm that it is a vast ﬁeld with
abundant opportunities to experiment with new ideas and
materials to create and satisfy the artist in ourselves. A
completed project gives immense work satisfaction. But at
the same time, it is very competitive since this not being a
regulated profession needing a licence to practice.
Sandeep added that the design, the ability to adapt to this
ever-changing scenario, the quality of the service and the
factor of integrity as a person should become the trump
cards of success in this ﬁeld.
