1. What is Me Too movement? The Me Too movement or #MeToo is a social movement against sexual abuse and sexual harassment towards women where people publicize allegations of sex crimes. Coined by sexual harassment survivor and activist TARANA BRUKE in 2006, the movement has come a long way. 2. What led to widespread media coverage ? On October 15,2017 , American actress Alyssa Milano posted on Twitter encouraging women who have been sexually harassed or assaulted to speak up against it and narrate their experiences using the phrase ‘Me Too’ following which over 70 women accused Harvey Weinstein (a Hollywood producer) of Sexual Harassment resulting in a global outrage on social media in support of the Me Too movement. #MeToo MOVEMENT .
# MeToo hit India in october,2018 It grew after after a hollywood producer was accused of sexual harassment by over 70 women. * * * Women bravely raised their voices on twitter against sexual harassment at workplace calling out the higher-ups and the powerful. Several well known names came up engulfing the Indian media and entertainment Industry.Actors, comedians, journalists, ministers and even politicians have been named and shamed on social media under the Me Too campaign. CASES WHICH ACTED AS CATALYSTS IN THE MOVEMENT The Ad Writer Mahima Kukreja accused Utsav Srivastava, a comedian from AIB, for sending inappropriate photos to her. The Bollywood Actress Anushree Dutta alleged that she was sexually harassed by veteran actor Nana Patekar on a movie set in 2008.
The Bangalore Journalist Bangalore based journalist Priya Ramani, who accused editor-turned-politician M.J.Akbar of sexual harassment. The aforementioned cases acted as a radical change for women of all age groups who survived sexual harassment of any sort. Women took matters in their own hands and proved that silence shall no longer prevail in these matters. The Young Survivor A 16 year girl was raped by a MLA Kuldeep Sengar in Unnao district in 2017. She was lured in the name of the job and raped.
HOW THE UPBRINGING OF MEN SHAPES THE SOCIETY AND LEADS TO GENDER BASED ABUSE IN INDIA? INDIA : One of the biggest democracy in the world, The land of riches, freedom and cultures. INDIA : The country where at least four women are raped every hour, and a woman harassed every two minutes. . A revolution as #MeToo Movement stands unanswered and demeaned because the storm it brought to a country like India accepts fake glory more easily than it’s bleeding reality.
No man is born a monster. He is raised, nurtured and taught to be a man who fears none, a man of authority and power. Even if he develops compassion and sensitivity, he is thought to be a blot on the very name of Manhood. Sexual abuse on women stems through every household of the India society, It starts when a girl is imposed with a deadline to be back at home whereas a boy is never questioned before he leaves the house .
The challenges Fake M e Too allegations. Many allegations were false at that time, just to blackmail or get back to men for past conflicts. Indian Me Too movement differs in key ways from the movement in the USA. The laws are not strong enough in India.
This issue of harassment became just a Political agenda for our leaders to gain more votes. India ranked No. 1 in world’s most dangerous country for women . ~ According to 2011 Survey India was ranked 4th out of 192 countries but 2018 India topped the table being the most dangerous country for women.
THE LOOPHOLES OF THE MOVEMENT The movement soon transformed into a platform for public humiliation with no checks, but more social media trials. During the movement, the repercussions of ‘social media allegations’ were far worse from what met the eye. While a few allegations did turn out to be true, many other died a natural death in the absence of the foundation of truth. In December 2018, 35-year-old Swaroop Raj, assistant vice president in Genpact was found hanging from the ceiling fan at his home because he was accused for sexual harassment.
I Vinta Nanda filed a rape case against actor Alok Nath, after months of investigation and lack of sufficient evidence, the police closed the case. Varun Grover (writer/stand-up comic) was also accused of harassment. The culprit remains anonymous.
HAS IT CHANGED ANY THING FOR WOMEN? #MeToo movement in India had both a positive as well as a negative impact on the work culture. It forced companies and institutions to introspect, constitute Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) and follow the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013 , also known as POSH law. Granted that online trial of any case especially sensitive cases of sexual harassment and rape is an ineffective and inefficient way but, the #MeToo movement that began on social media firstly and most importantly provided the women a platform to report their accounts. This clearly reflected the failure of the justice system that discourages women to approach them via proper channels. It also gave women a sense of safety by being anonymous while reporting their cases. Thirdly, it provided the resource and support to women who wanted to report their incidents but couldn’t.
Although it was a movement that empowered women to speak up, retaliation against the patriarchal mindset comes at a cost for women. In a few cases, women faced direct attempts of assault and intimidation by the accused. They also faced problems while finding work and were tagged as ‘trouble-makers’, sometimes boycotted for speaking out. Meanwhile, in the case of Priya Ramani, MJ Akbar slapped a defamation case against her that is being challenged in the court. While a sexual harassment case against ex-Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi was presided over in the court by a committee that included Gogoi himself, and unsurprisingly he was acquitted of the charges. In many other cases, even men who had serious charges of rape walked scot-free due to lack of evidence or due procedure.
CONCLUSION Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.” — Maya Angelou. #MeToo Reshapes India's Workplace A lot of individuals across various industries have started speaking out and while it is an extremely brave move in an otherwise politically correct and tight-lipped society that we live in, what remains to be seen is whether the widespread and large-scale impact of the #MeToo campaign is only temporary in India or will continue to push on for years to come.
