INTUC Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) is the trade union of the Indian National Congress. It was founded on 3 May 1947 and is affiliated with the International Trade Union Confederation. According to provisional statistics from the Ministry of Labour,INTUC now have a membership of 3,33,00,000.
Birth and Growth of INTUC The foundation of INTUC on 3 May 1947-just 3 months before India attained independence. Acharya JB Kripalani , who was then President of the Indian National Congress inaugurated the Founding conference of INTUC which was presided over by Sardar Vallabhai Patel . Under the guidance of Mahatma Gandhi, the founding fathers in their wisdom preferred to let the INTUC have an independent identity with its own constitution, while at the same time functioning as an arm of the Congress.
Objectives of INTUC To place industry under national ownership and control in suitable form in order to realise the aforesaid objectives in the quickest time . To organise society in such a manner as to ensure full employment and the best utilisation of its manpower and other resources . To guide and co-ordinate the activities of the affiliated organizations . To secure a living wage for every worker in normal employment and to bring about a progressive improvement in the workers standard of living. To assist in the formation of trade unions.
Objectives To promote the organisation of workers of each industry on a nationwide basis. To assist in the formation of Regional or Pradesh Branches or Federations. To secure speedy improvement of conditions of work and life and of the status of the workers in industry and society. To obtain for the workers various measures of social security, including adequate provision in respect of accidents, maternity, sickness, old age and unemployment. To regulate hours and other conditions of work in keeping with the conditions of the workers and to ensure the proper enforcement of legislation for the protection and up-lift of labour .
AFFILIATIONS Any trade union of workers/association of employed person, whether registered under the Trade Unions Act or any other statute, accepting the objects, means and other obligations under the Constitution may seek affiliation to the INTUC. The Financial year of INTUC shall be from 1st April to 31st March.
WORKS BY INTUC INTUC’s Youth Wing urged the state government to fix the prescribed fee structure for the private schools in Chamba district and pleaded for abolishing redundant funds, including donations. Recently , INTUC submitted a memorandum to solve the problems of 3.30 crore labourers in the country, however, the government never responded. INTUC to Start Campaign for Implementation of Street Vender Act . INTUC’s Kerala Unit aims at enhancing the livelihood security of people in rural areas
Problems with trade unions in India In India, political parties support some large trade unions. Politicisation means compromise with workers’ interests. Most of the labour force is uneducated . The trade unions act does not apply to the informal sector . A large section of the workforce is not represented. Trade unions are often under-financed. This means that they do not function to their full potential.
ACHIEVEMENTS INTUC joined hands with CITU(Centre of Indian Trade Unions) on the demand and the matter took a highly crystallized shape of an official joint Forum with many other important tea trade unions of other political forces in it. As a more important development, INTUC Assam unit has also joined hands with the movement giving it Eastern Indian shape . INTUC plans to spread influence in MNREGA in big way.
ACHIEVEMENTS The congress supported , INTUC ranks second in the list of 10 central unions with 38 lakh members . INTUC MEETING WITH HON'BLE PRIME MINISTER. 24th January, 2006 was an historic landmark in the annals of INTUC. The members of the working committee and State Presidents led by President called upon Hon’ble Prime Minister Dr. Man Mohan Singh . A memorandum on various issues concerning working class was presented to Hon’ble Prime Minister.
