Most commonly Indie bands do not feature themselves on the front cover of their albums, but
rather feature some form of art or graphic design or a staged photograph. A lot of the albums
send enigma codes and create a sense of mystery which could be a unique selling point for their
fans.
The font of the title is
quite quirky and retro
looking, in my opinion
it resembles a stamp
or print and is also
slightly angled as if the
placing of the title was
purposely made to
look unprofessional
and stuck on.
The positioning of the male is
quite relaxed, for example;
the relaxed shoulders, the
hand lightly holding a
cigarette, his eyes drooping
slightly and not fully open.
This accompanied with the
retro looking title gives a
purposely relaxed and
unprofessional look.
The black and white effect gives a stereotypical indie look
but also adds a relaxed look by taking away the vibrancy of
any colour and adding a blue undertone to the black and
white, this alongside the male gives an overall gives a
relaxed indie appearance.
The title of the artist is
quite feminine as it is
quite curved and flowing
like hand writing,
however it is placed right
at the top of the album
cover in black and white
which is different to the
rest of the album cover
almost to make the title
apparent but not to draw
attention from the main
image below.
The title of the album ‘Lungs’ relates to the visual
of the lungs that the artist is wearing and is also
placed directly on top of the lungs. The font is in
capitals but isn’t bold and therefore doesn’t take
any attention away from the image.
The background of the
image is very feminine
due to the flowers and
ornate pattern.
The positioning of the
artist is also very
feminine; both arms
are up and one hand is
placed near her face as
if she is in distress
much like a damsel in
distress. This contrasts
with the lungs which
could be seen as quite
gruesome making the
cover unique and
providing a unique
selling point.
Stereotypical band pose however
made unique by having a band
member upside down. This may
act as an enigma code
The band title is slanted
slightly to add a low
budget unprofessional
look, almost done by hand
to create this aesthetic.
The title of the album is small and discrete, it also
doesn’t attract the attention of the viewer immediately
due to the bold use of the colour red and the title.
However it is noticeable it is placed on a white
background being directed away from the rest of the
album cover.
The band members
are also showing
conventions of
Indie rock music as
they are wearing
all black which is
seen as
stereotypical
clothing for an
indie band.
