Indigenous Arts and Crafts of the Philippines GROUP 7

What are the arts and crafts in the Philippines? Traditional arts like weaving, metalsmith, pottery, woodcarving, and goldsmith are famous all over the country and are valued both by the locals and tourists. The valuable ornate carvings are a specialty in the southern Philippine Islands.

What is the indigenous craft in the Philippines? The native Filipino products, like wooden or rattan furniture and handicrafts, woven abaca or pina cloth, and other handmade or carved toy or trinket one usually finds in rural areas was made from indigenous raw materials. Natural fibers from rattan, bamboo, nipa leaves, abaca, and pina are commonly used for weaving.

Art was embedded in our culture from the beginning of time up to the present. It is one thing that can never be lost in a culture no matter what it goes through. The Philippines, having a rich culture, also has its share of art discovered, practiced, and applied in day-to-day living.

Each region of the Philippines has its own indigenous communities. Similarly, each of these communities has its own unique arts and crafts. In northern Luzon, for example, the Ilocanos are known for the craftsmanship of the cotton fabric inabel and the folk dance binatbatan . Whether it be visual arts, song, and dance, handicrafts, tapestries, clothing, or pottery, each region boasts of exceptional talent, skill, and creativity.

The earliest art forms in the Philippines that have not yet been somewhat penetrated by Western influences are music and dance. The war dance interwoven in Igorot rituals, the Ifugao funeral dance, and the Benguet victory dance are examples of the dances in pure indigenous form. Other dances represent the daily affairs of the community such as planting, fishing, pounding rice, etc.

CLOTH WEAVING One of the most valuable living traditions that are still preserved to this day is cloth weaving. Beginning in the pre-colonial era, the art of cloth weaving, particularly of the Cordillera tribes in the North, still lives notwithstanding the threat of the more practical production of fabrics today. The natives practice backstrap loom to create blankets and pieces of clothing.

Example:

BASKET WEAVING A basket is a must-have for carrying hunting animals, grains, and fishing in the waters. The baskets are made of bamboo to become their fish traps; the size and the shape of the baskets are based on the variety of fish they wish to catch.

JEWELRY MAKING Since the 16th century, it is presumed that jewelry making in the country already existed. It is known that the skills of the early Filipinos in creating jewelry are parented from our Asian neighbors like the Chinese people. There are two largest product classes of fine jewelry production in the Philippines: Metal Jewelry Pearls

POTTERY A model of this is the “ palayok ,” which is utilized for cooking. The “Banga” and “ Tapayan ” are also used for depositing liquids. There is also the stove or “Kalan” which is made out of clay. The production of “ Burnay ” pottery in the Ilocos Sur is yet a spirited tradition that remains up today.

WOODCARVING The Philippine sculpture is the most well-known art form of the Filipinos.  The most famous woodcarving in the Philippines is the carvings of the “Anitos” or the nature gods, “Santos” or saints, and figures of Christ and the Blessed Mother Mary.

TATTOOS Filipino tattoos have a rich history, dating back to before the Philippine Islands were colonized by Spaniards. When Spanish ships first arrived there, they were greeted by the heavily-tattooed Visayas tribe and they called the islands "La Isla De Los Pintados" which meant "The Island of the Painted Ones"

A Filipino person’s characteristic of being relational or communal is evident in his/her art. Traditional art reflects this orientation as well, with the following specifics: Art is not separated from its other values and functions such as “religious, moral, spiritual, social and ecological concerns” Sensory modes are cultivated holistically and have to be developed together Art is assimilated into life The community is involved in the work of art; thus, one artist is rarely recognized and remains anonymous most of the time There is no dichotomy between the artist and society No rigid standards dictate materials, forms, or techniques Process of creation is valued over the work of art Conceptualization and realization are simultaneous

What is the main feature of Filipino indigenous art? Indigenous Philippine art is art made by the indigenous peoples of the Philippines. It includes works in raw materials such as an extract from trees, fruits, and vegetables. Some of the art treasure of the Philippines is found in rock in caves, trees, and woods.
