Officially know as Region VIII, Eastern Visayas has six provinces, 12 districts, 7 cities, 136 municipalities and 4,390 barangays. Tacloban City is the regions administrative center. Eastern Visayas

History of Eastern Visayas

The history of eastern visayas , also known as region 8, is marked by the arrival of ferdinand magellan in 1521, the spanish colonization of the philippines , and the world war II battle of the leyte gulf: 

• M agellan's arrival on march 16, 1521, magellan and his crew landed on homonhon island in eastern samar , marking the first time they set foot on philippine soil. The first christian mass in the philippines was held on easter sunday , march 31, 1521 on limasawa island. 

• Spanish colonization the visayas became part of the spanish colony of the philippines , and the history of the visayans became intertwined with the history of the philippines . 

• World war II battle of the leyte gulf this was the longest naval battle in history. 

• Other historical events the mac arthur landing took place in palo, leyte .  Carigara was the first town established in eastern visayas , and celebrates its festival every july 16 to mark the arrival of the spaniards .

Eastern visayas is made up of the islands of leyte and samar , and includes six provinces and six cities. The region is known for its agriculture, with rice, corn, coconut, sugarcane, and banana as the main crops.

The Waray people are primarily found in the provinces of Samar, Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Biliran, and the eastern portion of Leyte. They constitute the majority of the population in these areas. WARAY

Waray culture is deeply rooted in their pre-colonial traditions, which have been blended with Catholic practices. They are known for their martial culture, often depicted as brave warriors. They are also known for their contentment culture, valuing simple living and community harmony. WARAY

The Samareños are known for their resilience and resourcefulness, having faced challenges like natural disasters and historical conflicts. Their culture is rich in music, dance, and storytelling, reflecting their deep connection to the land and their strong sense of community. Samareños

Leyteños are the people of Leyte, an island in the Eastern Visayas region of the Philippines. They are known for their vibrant culture, strong community spirit, and warm hospitality. Leyteños

The Bantaanon ethnic group, also known as the Bantayanon , are an indigenous people in Eastern Visayas, primarily residing in the northern part of Leyte island. They are known for their strong cultural traditions and unique way of life, which they have preserved despite the influences of modernization. Bantoanon

The Biliranon ethnic group, primarily residing in Biliran Island in Eastern Visayas, Philippines, are known for their strong cultural identity rooted in their unique language, customs, and traditions. They are known for their resilience and adaptability, having survived several historical challenges. Biliranon

Languages

Languages/dialect The province of samar is a member of the samar-leyte ( waray group), the sixth largest cultural-linguistic group in the country.  The majority (90.2%) of the total household population speaks the waray dialect .  The remaining 9.8 percent speaks cebuano (8.1%), boholano (0.07%), tagalog (0.5%) and other dialects.  Other languages used are english and chinese .
