INGRESS PROTECTION – IP55INGRESS PROTECTION – IP55
Presentation By : K.Senthilkumar.EMD

WHAT IS INGRESS PROTECTION-IP?
 Ingress Protection rating is used to specify the
environmental protection electrical enclosure - of electrical
equipment.
This ratings are developed by  the European Committee for
Electro Technical Standardization-CENELEC. NEMA IEC
60529 Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures - IP Code

Explanation of IP codes:
The IP Code reflects the degree of protection as "IP" followed by
two numbers.
The first digit shows the enclosures are protected against
particles, and protection to others from enclosed hazards.
The second digit indicates protection against water.
We carry IP55 enclosures that demonstrate almost complete
protection from particles and a good level of protection against
water.

Guide for IP Ratings:

Characteristics of IP55 Enclosures
Protection
from dirt, dust, oil, and other non-corrosive
material.
Complete
protection from contact with enclosed
equipment.
Protection
from water, up to water projected by a nozzle
against
enclosure from any direction.

MOTOR
ASSEMBLY

Where to find ip?

Motor Enclosure Considerations
Selecting the correct motor enclosure requires numerous
considerations.
But the most common need is to safeguard the functionality of
equipment and to protect both personnel and environment.

DEGREES OF PROTECTION
IP55
Degrees of Protection - First Digit
The first digit of the IP code indicates the degree that persons are
protected against contact with moving parts (other than smooth
rotating shafts, etc.) and the degree that equipment is protected
against solid foreign bodies intruding into an enclosure.

Degrees of Protection - Second Digit
The second digit indicates the degree of protection of the equipment
inside the enclosure against the harmful entry of various forms of
moisture (e.g. dripping, spraying, submersion, etc.)

Results of IP55 enclosure failure
Water ingress:
Water must never be allowed to get into a motor.
Water ingress into the motor will go between the stator
coils or into the terminal box and short circuit and burn
out the motor.
Water ingress in the motor bearings can lead to its
detoriation.

Example
of water ingress
Crusher-2B:

Dust ingress
Dust ingress into the stator coils or the terminal housing leads
to short-circuiting.
It can also lead to winding heating in result temperature rise
of motor.
If the motor is to be in a dusty environment keep the
immediate area around the motor clean.

Example
of Dust ingress

Preventive measures to avoid water/ Dust ingress:
Use proper screws in motor terminal box covers. Ensure all sides
are intact to prevent water/dust ingress.
Check the gasket between stator frame and terminal box and
replace if necessary.

Wet areas
For wet areas, there are now several choices:
*Modify standard industrial motors to a minimum IP56 rating.
*Fit stainless steel shrouds over standard motors.
*Use stainless steel motors with a standard IP rating of IP56 or IP66.
Dry areas
Standard industrial electric motors of proven quality with an IP55
rating have proven to be very reliable, provided excess dust is
not allowed to collect on the motor
