HONDA MOTORCYCLES AND SCOOTERS INDIA
PVT. LTD. (H.M.S.I)

•HONDA, one of the biggest brand names in the automobile
world today was founded by Soichiro Honda at Hamamatsu,
Japan in 1948
•Honda Motor Company, Japan with its headquarters in Tokyo,
has manufacturing operations in 32 countries with 109
production bases. It has 3 business divisions namely
2-wheelers, 4-wheelers and Power Products.

H.M.S.I PLANT
•Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), a wholly
owned subsidiary of Honda Motor Company Ltd. was incorporated
on 20th August 1999 to manufacture two wheelers in India.

Weld Diptt. Overview
• Weld Shop has spot welding, seam welding and MIG welding
machines toweld various sheet metal parts to form the basic
frame and other scooter panels

•MIG welding is an automatic or semi-automatic process in
which a wire connected to a source of direct current acts as
an electrode to join two pieces of metal as it is continuously
passed through a welding gun
•Resistance welding process in which fusion of faying surfaces
of a lap joint is achieved at one location by opposing
electrodes

ROBOTIC WELDING

•The main aim of any organisation is to increase
the productivity without compromising the
quality .

•Productivity can be increased by two ways
1. By minimizing the defects
2. By reducing the cycle time

Working Plan

Various Problems:

•Dent on Body Cover
•Grinding mark on body cover
•Spatter on body cover
•Punch mark on body cover

1. Inspection Before Welding
•Visual Inspection
Prior to any welding, the materials should be visually inspected to
see that they are clean, aligned correctly, machine settings, filler
selection checked, etc
•Liquid Penetrant Inspection
This procedure is as follows:
•Clean the surface of the weld and the weld vicinity
•Spray the surface with a liquid dye that has good penetrating
properties
•Carefully wipe all the die off the surface
•Spray the surface with a white powder
•Any cracks will have trapped some die which will weep out and
discolour the white coating and be clearly visible

VARIOUS DEFECTS

DENT MARK PUNCH MARK

Causes of defects in BDC
•Careless handling.
•Masking not present in trolleys.
•Collision when loaded in hangers.
•One of the most effective tools used to shape and clean steel is the
grinding wheel. These high-speed tools are able to rapidly remove large
quantities of material but can often leave behind marks on the finished
part.
•Adhering of small particles of weld metal expelled from the welding
operation to the base metal surface.
•Long arc length, severe electrode angles, high amperages.
•During pressing or drilling.

COUNTERMEASURES
•Proper and careful handling.
•Repairing the dent using plunger.
•Avoid using the grinding wheels above the
permitted speed.
•Polishing can be used to remove grinding marks.
•Rectifying the arc length, electrode angle and
current while welding.
•Can be removed by grinding.
•Pressing in a proper way.
•Repairing using plunger.

SPOT WELDING PROCESS

2. Minimizing cycle time
•Cycle time is defined as the total elapsed time to move a unit
of work from the beginning to the end of a physical process
