Initially the synovium become oedematous ,filled with fibrin exudates Synovium is hypertrophied and surrounds the periphery of articular cartilage to form pannus Articular cartilage looses its shiny smooth appearance and pannus extend over the cartilage and burrows into the subchondral bone. Joint get deformed , initially because of severe muscle spasm with pain and later due to fibrosis of the capsule. In some cases, adhesions may develop between layers of pannus leading to fibrous ankylosis and later bony ankylosis.
