2.Aurangzeb's 6-year siege of Ramshej Fort (1682 - 1688)
Under the leadership of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Aurangzeb waged a major war to
destroy the entire Maratha Empire. He attacked many Maratha forts, the attack on Ramshej
Fort was a great success.
First attack of the Maratha army (1682)
In 1682, Aurangzeb sent Sheikh Nazir, a chieftain, with 25,000 Maratha troops to Ramshej Fort. The
Maratha army initially tried to capture the fort, but the Marathas made a strong attack. After that,
the Marathas lifted the siege and tried to cut off the supply. The Marathas attacked the fort and the

Marathas had only 600 soldiers at Ramshej Fort. Even with such a small army, they held off the
Marathas for 6 years! The Marathas used Rakmini (secret attacks, night attacks, tactics to deceive the
enemy) and inflicted heavy losses on the Maratha army. The Marathas' new strategy – the attack of
the enemy and the attempt of the underground plan Aurangzeb ordered his soldiers to come with a
big attack (big attack). An attempt was made to completely break the fortification of the fort by using
big attacks. The Marathas tried to dig a tunnel (ditch) under the fort and enter, but the Marathas,
realizing this, foiled their plan. However, the Marathas attacked the Maratha soldiers and killed
them. The Marathas attacked the fort and the Mughals retreated. The Mughals successfully attacked
the Ramshej Fort and tried to capture it. But the Maratha soldiers again attacked hard and captured
the fort. The Morl army failed repeatedly. Aurangzeb's defeat and the failure of the Sardars Seeing
that the fort could not be captured despite 6 years of efforts, Aurangzeb was disappointed. He gave
the responsibility of rebuilding the fort to a Sardar named Fazil Khan. But he also failed, so Aurangzeb
removed Fazil Khan from his post. Finally, the Mughals left the fort! Finally, in 1688, the Mughals
gave up and lifted the siege of Ramshej Fort. Such a large army could not defeat only 600 Marathas
despite 6 years of effort!
Shivaji Maharaj's action at Ramshej
Ramshej was a great humiliation for the Marathas and a great loss for the Mughals.
3. Status of the fort in the following years
After the death of Aurangzeb in 1707, the fort fell under the control of the Marathas. For the next ten
years, the fort remained under the control of the Marathas. When the Nainitalists conquered the
entire Maratha Empire in 1818, Ramshej Fort also came under their control.
