DEFINITION : Informed consent, an ethical and legal obligation of medical practitioner is a collaborative process in which doctor/assistant/nurse inform the patient in writing about the risks, benefits, and alternatives of a needed procedure or intervention.

Common indication’s Implementation of treatment plans and performing any procedure Specific procedures and surgeries Blood Transfusions Anesthesia Research work ; Informed consent is mandatory for all clinical trials involving human beings .

Elements of informed consent Nature of the procedure Risks and benefits of the procedure Reasonable alternatives and their risks and benefits Assessment of the patients understanding regarding in the above mentioned issues

CHILDREN AND INFORMED CONSENT Doctrine of Loco parentis ; In pediatric emergencies, when their parent/guardian is not available, consent can be obtained from the accompanying person .

It’s necessity An informed consent ensures that ; A patient received all the relevant information about his /her procedure from the healthcare provider. Patient understands this information. Patient used this information to determine whether or not he/she wants the procedure. Patient agrees, or consent, to get some or all of the treatment options .

CAUTIONS REGARDING CONSENTS One consent for one procedure Avoid blanket consent in routine practise, which is taken for more than one procedure. Get consent on a special form prepared specifically for the consent purpose.

Contd ….. Take consent in the presence of third party witness(resident doctor, physician assistant,nurse ) with proper signatures. Examination of a female patient by a male doctor must be conducted in the presence of a female nurse /assistant when it is an examination of the private parts of the patient.
